“Fantastic!”

Spectacular and amazing place.
Must see in that part of Greece. Accessibility to the monasteries is a big plus. Also, the closeness of the attraction in general from the Egnatia odos which makes it pretty close if you are visiting the Ionian coastline.

“Spectacular!”
Reviewed April 15, 2013

There is a spectacular geografical site, with six monasteries built on natural stone pillars. Some of them are over 500 m above the plain. They are accesible by staircases cut into the rock. After Mount Athos, Meteora is the largest and most important complexes of monasteries in Greece.

“wow! wow! wow”

nothing prepares you for the sheer strangeness and impact of the rock formations, and each different angle is spellbinding. Some of the monastries didn't charge for our tall 16-year old school child, some did. Be prepared for a LOT of steps. We visited 5 of the 6 monastries, and my legs felt like jelly afterwards! But it is so, so, so amazing.
It is a 5 hour (with breaks) drive from Athens, so stay the night at Doupiani House for the views.
Toll road: many many tolls, costs about Eu 10-15 each way.
Don't worry about wearing trousers (Ladies), there are wrap-around skirts at each entrance.

“Spectacular , must see. Though a bit out of the way.”

A Spectacular geographic area complimented by the Monisteries pearched atop the rocks. You follow the road from town up and around with multiple viewing bays as you go. When we were there there was a bit of rain and low lying cloud made the place look even more magical. You can go in for a tour but most are "working Monisteries" so closed. Suprisingly close to quite a large town , Highway and industrial area.
