Cano Negro is off the beaten track and in the early stages of developing tourism. As such it's a wonderful and very special place to visit. There are great opportunities for birding (yes I saw my first Trogan there), fishing (yes, my husband fought an over 100 lb tarpon on a fly rod for 2 hours), and meeting wonderful, friendly people like Rosie. Although not an official park ranger she is the best one to answer any of your questions about the area. Rosie and her husband Joe run the tour company on the square in the tiny village, near the dock. You will not have a problem if you don't speak Spanish and the prices are very affordable. If you go to Costa Rica and don't get out to see nature with them you'll miss a lot!

Instead of taking an organized boat tour from Los Chilles, we arrived by car to the Cano Negro village and took a tour there with Tropical Paradise company. The owner treated us warmly and helped us to buy lunch after the long drive and before the boat trip. The boat trip itself was excellent. The captain, Ernesto was very experienced, and with reasonable English showed us birds, iguanas, kaymans, bats and monkeys of two kinds. We would never be able to track these hiding animals without his help. We had a great time and we warmly recommend it!

We arrived at Cano Negro somewhat late in the afternoon, with only about an hour and a half to two hours of remaining daylight. We stopped in town and saw a local restaurant that had signs about a tour. Though no one spoke English, and unfortunately no one in our party of 4 spoke Spanish, the folks there went out of their way to make sense of what we were asking. They summoned Rosi, who was probably happily settled into doing whatever she was doing, and she went about the business of fueling up a boat, getting a driver for the boat, and figuring out what she could show us before sundown. She was our own private guide as there was no one else aboard. She obviously knew her stuff well, and knew where to see the native wildlife. She did a great howler monkey imitation, and managed to get the monkeys roaring in response. She was a wonderfully friendly guide, and we just couldn't believe how accommodating she was given our late request. Ask for Rosi if you go, and make sure she does her howler monkey imitation.

We took this tour on the recommendation of a good friend, of ours who lives in in our village of El Castillo, Costa Rica. Since we had family visiting from the USA, we wanted them to experience a trip to the Cano Negro, because of the wonderful opportunities for wildlife photography. Although a little tough to find, this little tour group delivered on our 3 hour tour, big time and at a price we could afford, instead of the over inflated prices that greet most tourists in Costa Rica. Our guide, Rosie spoke very good English and our boat captain, Ernesto, never hesitated to take us anywhere on the river we wanted to go. He was a great spotter! We would recommend this tour to anyone looking for a fun personal tour and will gladly add it to our list of recommendations for the guests that stay in our own vacation rental home, Hacienda Encantada, as well.
