“Good but room for improvement”
Reviewed June 27, 2012 via mobile

This is a definitely a case of where Trip Advisor needs a category between average and very good. Went as a party of 6 on a Thursday night. Lovely, clean old village pub and a menu with lots of nice choices. The food was like very good home cooking and the staff were very friendly. Why not very good then? Because it felt a bit haphazard and we were kept waiting a very long time between courses. Drinks service was completely lacking. There were quite a few dishes on and each had very specific home made accompaniments - my trout was served with potato pancakes. Unless you have a high turnover of food and a huge kitchen brigade I can see how this would slow you down. Fair play though, I'd rather this than microwaved food banged out but they do need to improve timing and service. Won't stop me returning though, maybe to try lunch next time.

“Could Be so much better”
Reviewed June 11, 2012

Took ourselves off to the lovely village of Barley to the Fox and Hounds after reading glowing reviews about this pub and restaurant. It's set in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside between Ware and Royston ..

We went specifically for Sunday lunch. The customer service was pleasant , and very helpful. The Sunday lunch which consisted of Roast Beef or Pork, we had the beef which was cooked to perfection medium rare and arrived very quickly. Unfortunately the same couldn't be said for the rest of the meal.

The 3 small Roast Potatoes were hard, and chewy and had obviously been left for a long time after cooking. The vegetable were hard and a generic Veg Mix which looked like they'd been cooked from frozen. Apart from the hard potatoes which arrived piping hot, possibly microwaved, the rest of the meal was cold.
We didn't complain because the staff were so nice, and overall the food was edible.
The beer was advertised as coming from Local breweries yet there was nho local brew on offer, the nearest was a Norfolk Ale.

Despite the pleasant staff, we wouldn't recommend the Sunday Lunch or the Beer.!
