My girlfriend and me thourght we would spen new year with some friend, and we stopped at The Pelican Inn in Froxfield.
We landed late evening on the 30th dec, and where made to feel very welcome, and although food had stopped being served, we where offered a welcome snack, we had eaten on the motor way!!! and this was much apprecitiated, and went down well with a nice drink.
We had a double room on the road side, absolutly spotless, nicely fernished and had a nicley deep bath, as well as a shower in a very spaciouse bath room.
To say we where on the road side we could not hear any traffic noise, the double glassing is good!.
We rose in the morning, Late, missed breakfast, but Kirsty and Terry and Patrick, where very welcoeming, and arranged coffee and bacon sandwiches for us! again thank you and nice big Butties they where too.
We then went and spent some time in Malbrough and Hungerford, both lovely places and we even had somthing to eat in malbrough at a place Kirsty advised, very nice!.
The new year buffet that Terry put on was GREAT!!!!! haggis n the lot!, the Irish band (brilliant) that where on, realy got every one involved and a Top night was had by all!!!!!!.
Had another good sleep and a good hot bath to wake ourselves up, we missed breakfast again, but patrick was on hand and revived us with plenty of coffee and one of them great butties again, which was just what we needed befor the drive home!!!!!!.
I have to say Thank you to Terry and Kirsty, Patrick and all the staff for a very very relaxing and enjoyable new year, in a lovely pub with some of the friendlyest locals i have ever met!.
Thank you and we hope to come again sooner rarther than later.

Arrived with friends of ours on New Years Eve as we were meeting up with relatives who were already booked in & staying over, we booked for Dinner on the entertainment package and it was absolutely excellent, the staff are friendly, polite and very eager to help and assist, we had the Haggis supper and it was really very good,

An Irish Band played Live music for the evening and at 12 fireworks were set off to the sound of Bag-Pipes which was a lovely touch and made the event even more memorable for us,

We Would like to thank the new management and team for a job well done and we look forward to spending many more memorable days and nights with you and the guys,

( next time remembering to bring little Rosie to meet Murphy the tiny Jack Russel too )

We had our Christmas party with The Pelican recently and thought it was excellent. There were 38 of us and they ensured they accommodated our seating requirements in the restaurant so that we were sitting as we wished. The choices on their Christmas menu were varied with something more interesting than usual for the vegetarians. Lovely food with generous portions. I had the pate to start, salmon main and Christmas pudding and it was all delicious.

We will most definitely be back again!

I don't quite know where to start with this one, the meal was SO bad we were all quite taken aback as it is so rare these days to experience such a poor show. We had chosen The Pelican as a meeting point for a family meal after having eaten good food here several times in the past - we were however unaware that it was under new management.
Alarm bells started ringing for me when upon asking the waiter what the specials were, we were simply informed 'ham, egg and chips'. Oh dear. There were Christmas parties in progress in various parts so there was s significant delay in seating us, however all this paled in to insignificance when the starters arrived. My jaw nearly hit the floor when the soups arrived with 2 soggy triangles of badly-buttered Mothers Pride hanging limply off the plates. Now I am no Jay Rayner, but this is the sort of thing you would expect at a greasy spoon. Incredulous, I asked the waiter if this could be replaced with some 'decent bread', whereupon some (slightly) more appetising slices of white roll were produced. 3 of us ordered 'herb crusted Brie with salad and redcurrant jelly' - upon arrival, the portions were minute and a joke for over £6. The Brie had been cut so thinly that on (over) cooking, all the cheese had disappeared leaving a dry, crumbly shell with not a hint of 'herb' to be seen. All 3 plates were the same.

We attempted to eat as we were VERY hungry by now, however the quality of the offering was SO poor that most was left. The soups came without their tapenade and croutons (as advertised) and after asking, they were brought after we had all finished. I won't bore you any more as I think you have got the picture - the mains were barely adequate - bland, poorly-cooked and badly presented. The waiter then offered us extra roast potatoes and 'rooted vegetables' as they had 'loads left' (not suprised) but 5 minutes later after asking for some, we were informed that there were none available any more. A truly dreadful experience all in all.
The only saving grace was that the Assistant Manager took the starters off the bill without being asked and was polite, courteous and friendly at all times. He was obviously struggling with some seriously amateur individuals in the kitchen. A child could have produced better food.
This was without doubt the WORST meal out I / we have experienced in many, many years and we shall never go back again. BEWARE!!!

We are sorry our standards slipped spoiling your outing and that you left still feeling aggrieved about your experience, despite the efforts of the Duty Manager to make amends.

A new team took over just three weeks before your visit and clearly struggled with the weight of Christmas party bookings on this occasion. We are pleased that you thought the Duty Manager handled the problems well and he in turn was heartened by the positive comments made by the rest of your party on their main courses.

The team have now settled into their stride and we are getting many appreciative comments from dinners. We would love you to visit again and give us another chance to show how good we can be.

Booked last minute online without checking reviews for an overnight stay as at a trade show in Newbury. Arrived at 6pm to a warm welcome and shown straight to our room.
Soon back down to the bar for some local beer (for hubby), where Luke and Charlie were so friendly and very funny, we talked for ages before ordering our food. My husband had the chicken skewers with 2 dips and I had the chicken liver and smoked bacon parfait, lovely. We then had the specials, a salmon dish and calves liver, also very good. We are greedy so had desserts too! The lemon meringue roulade and sticky toffee pudding, all fab-u-lous! As we were staying we also had a bottle of Rioja. The room was a big one with an extra bed for a child, but used this for our bags, and a sofa too. Our only complaint was the bed is a double and at home we have a king. We are quite tall so found this annoying. The room is more than big enough to take it.
If I was staying in the summer and had the window open I would personally find the road and railway annoying. The breakfast was great and the lady at brekkie was very nice. I heard a guy complain about his basin tap not working, he didn't complain about it the night before, so more fool him! They could've sorted it.
All in all a great stay in a modern boutique pub and we will definitely go back next year!
