“Warm and comfortable”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2013

I have stayed here before in the depth of winter and found the standards are as good this time round as last time. If you want to stay and use the room as almost self catering, the facilities are there. Toaster, kettle, and a fridge so it is ideal to use as a base for touring round. I went on a business trip meeting elsewhere in the evening so it was just for a bed for the night and breakfast the following morning. The Staff are very friendly and welcoming, the room is a good size, with shower and facilities provided alongside. Breakfast was cooked to order, and was just as I had asked (this does not always happen), and was of a good quality and very tasty. Nice place and I will always stay there if I need to attend meetings in the area. The rooms are all in an adjacent building to the pub and restaurant, so access is very easy.

As a very pleasant pub with better than average British pub food at very competitive prices, the Pelican Inn scores well. It is also in a lovely spot. Very convenient for Stonehenge especially and just outside the tiny, chocolate box village of Stapleford. The pub is the strongest part. A very good selection of pub dishes, ranging from the traditional to the slightly more adventurous. Importantly they strike a decent balance between being above average but short of pretentious. The Wednesday night "pie special" that I had (2 different pies with chips for about £10) was particularly good value. Portions are generous. The atmosphere is friendly and the selection of ales is good.

The accommodation is pretty good with a couple of drawbacks. Rooms are in a single storey block in a mini courtyard to the rear of the pub, away from the road and adjacent to the tidy beer garden area. Rooms are quite spacious, comfortable, clean and well heated. Mine included TV, tea/coffee facilities and (unusually) a toaster. Toiletries are minimal so remember to bring your own. Wifi is free, although the signal can vary in its strength.

There are two drawbacks with the accommodation. The first is that the walls in the rooms carry sound very effectively indeed. I could hear the TV and conversation of my neighbours quite clearly even though they weren't at all noisy people. Fortunately they were not night owls or party animals so it didn't put me out. The second drawback (a bit more infuriating) was that breakfast did not start till 8am. The problem with that is that if you are staying at the Pelican whilst working somewhere even nearby, assuming you probably need to get to work for 9am, breakfast just isn't an option. Maybe that's why they've stuck a toaster in the rooms.

Overall, though, very good value for money, particularly on the pub and food side

Very friendly helpful staff who were all attentive, Evening meal was good as was the cooked breakfast. Room warm and spacious and good hot shower. The bed mattress was very soft but this might suit some people.
A good place for a stopover etc and ideal for people with children or dogs as both are welcome.

Stayed here as needed to attend a business meal just up the road. Accommodation is set to the rear of the pub, well heated room, obviously can also cater for people who want to have toast etc, as one of the rooms has a kitchenette area. Comfortable bed, warm well heated room, digital TV, tea and coffee facilities in the room. Nice breakfast cooked to order. Very friendly staff giving a warm welcome and also very helpful in dealing with enquiries.

Friendly staff, great food and value for money. Plenty of parking and a nice warm fire features in the dining area.Good range of ales, extensive food specials on board. BBQ area in the garden for warm days. Room adequate but could be updated, no problems though.

called for lunch on 24/8/12 on our way to Bournemouth.
My wifes BLT ciabatta was fine, my so called steak and brie was awful..soggy..hardly any brie and the steak was two tiny pieces of gristle.
Complained to the barman who said ' SORRY ABOUT THAT MATE' and that was it.
Shocking customer service, poor quality ciabatta, and no suitable apology or due consideration.
very annoying, wont be visiting this couldnt care less place again

Arrived at five...dinner is not served until six. The wonderfully warm and welcoming bartender urged us to wait..."Ranked second in pub food!" he proudly announced. We were hungry and would be forgiving had the food been better than average. Bruschetta arrived on soggy non pre-toasted bread. It would have been average or better had the bread not yielded before our teeth arrived. Her salmon was farm raised, cooked just about right, but assaulted by a dill browned butter sauce that was more than browned. The salad as well assaulted by a dijon mustard dressing. My battered fish was just O.K. a reasonable portion which had little zest. The mashed peas were a green glob that caused on-going intestinal distress for several days following.
We waited. We were promised it would be worth the wait. Was it? Nope!

Room Tip: we ate there...it is also an Inn and I heard a number of folks who appeared to sound satisfied.
