The Tolmie Tavern is a pleasant if unpretentious building in this tiny town with extensive eucalypt ('gum tree') forest on all approaches.

When we arrived at Saturday lunchtime about 20 motorcyclists were in attendance, but they left within half an hour.

A kookaburra was regularly swooping down from a power line and gorging on meat that some of those having lunch provided for it. Lucky bird!

After equippping ourselves with (Tasmanian not Victorian) Cascade beers, we waited quite a while for our roast lunch.

It was worth the wait.

Succulent beef with pumpkin, half a corn cob, broccoli, roast potato and if one so desired gravy: just as Mum would cook it.

Delicious and complemented by a comfortable small dining room in which to enjoy it.

Not Michelin-type service or food, but who cares?
