From being picked up at Almeria airport, by Emma, to leaving three days later everything was perfect. Position of Las Chimeneas was great with views across the Fincas and valley, room was very comfortable and big, the food was excellent, walking was splendid and David and Emma went just that little bit further to make the stay as good as they could. If returning to that area Las Chimeneas would be first on the list.

Sometimes you remember a place for ever, this has gone onto that list for us, for so many reasons. We wanted sunshine, good food and some walking - we got all 3 and more in mid February when England was drowning. Hills covered in almond blossom, very kind and hospitable hosts, delicious food made from local ingredients and cooked with love and care, quiet, plenty of time to read and watch the sunrise. This is not the sort of place for people who want lots of noise, shops, or trouser presses. However it is worth the journey, you come back feeling refreshed, and as if you have had some time out of a busy life. Really fabulous.

Well, it's pretty much all been said already regarding the location, welcome, food, service, accommodation, ambiance etc. Can't fault it and wouldn't want to. Emma and David's approach could be described as low key but I think "wistful" gets closer to it which makes for a slightly unusual atmosphere - very calm and peaceful to match the stunning silence of the Alpujarras (notwithstanding the occasional chain saw!). They obviously have a deep affection for the community and it's traditions. We got to meet people like Adolfo (Adolpho?) who owns the olive press and doubles as a taxi driver and Miguel who came and ploughed the vegetable plot where you felt you could cut out the middle man and just eat the soil which smelled like truffles. And Sole and Conchi of course who produce such fine food, and Fernanda and Jill (Gill?), the latter speaking Spanish with a slight Scottish accent. Other people in the village smile broadly as they see yet another stranger in odd clothing who comes to walk when they don't have to.

Mairena itself has a fairy tale quality to it especially when viewed from the path to Valor to the west. But this is no museum, it's still a working community and David said the recession had brought those that had gone to the cities back to their land. If only we had that option in UK.

We came in to Granada from London City airport (service was introduced in July 2013) which is worth noting especially for those in London and on the eastern side of the country. The flights are at civilised times and make a long weekend easily doable. Granada airport is small and very user friendly and right on the motorway and it's only an hour and a half drive as long as the road over the Sierra Nevada is open. An extra half an hour if it's closed by snow.

We'll definitely be back. Apart from anything else I need to take an appropriate container and bring back some of that olive oil!

Room Tip: We stayed in "No 3" which is a self contained apartment with its own little kitchen and a...

We stayed here as part of a walking tour and we could not have asked for better service. The accommodation is basic but comfortable and quaint, the food provided by the restaurant is excellent: hearty breakfasts with fresh local fruit, filling picnic lunches to take on your walk and tasty and unique 3-course dinners in the evening. And Emma and David provide knowledgeable advice for walks in the area.

This place is a real gem, and it's mostly down to Emma and David being such stars. No idea how they stay so relaxed and friendly while running a 10-room hotel which serves 3-course dinners every night and offers walking tours and other little excursions each day. You really feel like they're welcoming you as friends (cliché but true in this case).

Meals are great (thanks Soledad) – 3 courses every night, with a choice of 3 options including meat, fish and veggie. Unusual local wines, and we enjoyed our trip to a wine estate one night.

We didn't do any guided walks with Emma and David but they were immensely helpful about giving us maps and showing us the best routes. Also about giving us a lift to the start of a ridge walk from where you can see Africa.

There are plenty of really sweet white villages to walk to and have lunch. The walking is fairly easy in most parts and you can forage along the way for berries, prickly pears, figs etc.

Views are amazing, especially from the front room in the main house which has two balconies.

All in all a really super place for a getaway in the Alpujarras. I'd recommend it to anyone!

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main house, at the front – two big balconies and amazing views!

Mairena is a little village 3000ft up in the Alpujarras and the jewel in its crown is Las Chimeneas!
It ticks all the boxes - the rooms are large and airy, the views from the balconies are stunning, Emma and David and their staff take wonderful care of you and the food is out of this world!
I stayed there on a weeks walking holiday, my first time in that area, and had a wonderful time. The walks were led by either David or Emma and were either from the village or we were transported by minibus to the start of the walk. Picnic lunches were provided and the walks were not too strenuous so were very enjoyable.
Both David and Emma are very knowledgable about their surroundings and will impart their knowledge if required.
Soli and her team in the kitchen kept us well fed with locally produced food and the wine from the local vineyard was excellent. What more can I say? Go and see for yourself!!

Room Tip: We were above the restaurant in a spacious room with very comfy beds and a large balcony.

Everything about Las Chimeneas is rural in the best possible way - the rooms, the furniture, the food, the ambience, the untouched by tourism farming village of Mairena - and it all works brilliantly with the whole being even better than the excellent parts. Food and wine feature prominently with Soli and her brigade producing a range of meals in the euro bistro tradition but with large dose of personal magic. Gill and Andrew - side line maker of marvellous cakes - conduct proceedings in the dining rooms with aplomb. It's all pulled together with the effortless ease achieved by years of hard work by the charming and affable Dave and Emma Illsley, who on top of the usuals, provide advice on walks (guide notes and maps include), lifts to start and end points, visits to their finca and the centuries old church with its combined cross and star of David in neighbouring Jubar.

A few words about the walks. There is not a piece of flat ground for miles around and some of it is hard going but the reward is worthy of the effort - it just doesn't feel like it sometimes!
Finally our fellow guests added to the enjoyment - we overlapped with graham e and lasharoo, great fun and it was quieter after they had left.
