This hotel has a great location -- once you find it and we would heartily recommend the effort. It is located on a pedestrian street on the edge of the Plaza Major in this charming Basque fishing town. The hotel is an 18c palacio carefully and tastefully rehabbed this past year into a hotel with only a few rooms. Our hostess spoke no English & our Spanish comprehension doesn't include a Basque accent, so we communicated either thru her English-speaking spouse or via the computer & a translation program, which worked very well actually.
We recommend getting directions for a place to park when you make your reservations; once you get to the hotel you'll get the key that lowers the street bollards so you can park right on the nearby harborside.
The building has an elevator, & the family lives on the top 2 floors. Our room was on the 2nd floor & we actually had 2 rooms with 3 balconies; two looked at the basilica (lovely at night!), the other a typical small-town Basque street. The set-up would be perfect for a family.
Our bathroom was new and spotless. Breakfast was simple: tea, coffee, juice & either cake or toast for an extra charge.
Many tapas bars and restaurants nearby, and a lovely harbor & beach to stroll. We watched the fishing boats come in one morning and saw fresh octopus, lobster, salmon, squid, shrimp and every other imaginable shell fish coming ashore.
