The unusual attractiveness of Laguardia makes it rather more expensive than you’d expect for rural Spain, so we weren’t sure what to expect from Marita - but we were delighted. The location is perfect ... as the description says, it’s just outside the old town. In fact it’s on the town hill, just outside the town wall opposite one of the gates - making it about 3 minutes from (misnamed) Plaza Mayor. Rooms on one side of the hotel have balconies overlooking the old town, while on the other side they overlook the plains, vineyards, and lagoon. The room was a generous size, and very comfortable, clean and attractively decorated, as was the ensuite - I imagine the accommodation floor has been refurbished relatively recently, and they’ve done a very good job. The staff were very friendly and helpful ... although, as a small business, it doesn’t have many staff on duty and occasionally you might have to wait a little for attention. The only downside was the lack of a lift ... the reception is on the first floor, and the rooms up another floor ... but staff were very ready to help with luggage.
Breakfast was the standard fresh orange juice with tostada and choice of hot drink - but included ham (or cheese on request), so the 5€ cost was similar to what you’d pay elsewhere in the town (it also included pulped tomato and olive oil, a Spanish breakfast choice that we like). On a good morning you’d be offered a refill of your coffee, but unfortunately this didn’t always happen.
We didn’t get to try the restaurant - unusually, it wasn’t open for two night of our stay - but we did notice that it commands stunning views overlooking the plains below the town.
We hope to return!

We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Marixa - perfect position for visiting the walled city across the street and the region. We found parking very close by but I imagine in peak season this would be difficult. It snowed while we were there which such a treat. The view from the balcony was superb with and without snow. Mountain view rooms are a must. Two staircases to get bags up was a small problem. We had breakfast once and once only in the hotel- very basic and unappetising. There is a bakery in the city only minutes walk away where croissants can be obtained- delicious. Rooms were nice, beds comfortable, very good heating and reasonably spacious. The historical gate to the city is right across the road and a great restaurant - amelebia- is just down the road about 50 metres. The bar next door ( belongs to the hotel) was friendly and quite good and open where most of the places in the walled town were closed, it would seem because it was out of season.
We felt like we were the only visitors in the place which was great but not a lot of choice for cafes etc.
Overall an excellent place to stay- good value.

We stayed here two nights. The bed was good and comfortable but room looked a little tired and bathroom really quite outdated. Breakfast was extremely basic and cost 4.50 euros extra per person. We thought Laguardia in general was rather expensive and I would say this hotel was overpriced for what you got- however accommodation is limited and when we booked choice within our budget was limited.

It is difficult to rate this hotel because the views from the large balcony terrace in the "Mountain View" rooms are 6-star, when everything else about the hotel is just 3-star. The hotel is excellently located just opposite the gates to the medieval city. Parking is only available in the street (if you are lucky or patient), and reception is up one flight of stairs and the bedrooms up a second flight (no elevator). Reception was welcoming. The bedroom was tired, but clean with a working bathroom. We could not get WiFi signal in our bedroom but others closer to reception had signal. The hotel restaurant shares the same stunning views. breakfast was average. It is worth putting up with the stairs and tired 2-3 star facilities just for the pleasure of enjoying a glass of wine from the balcony terrace and taking in the 180 degree 6-star view of the Rioja landscape. Do it!

Room tip: Only stay if you can get a Mountain View (for the view) room above reception (for the WiFi signal).
