We were so glad that we chose el Castillo el Collado for our stay in Laguardia. We originally planned only one night there, but it was so nice that we decided to extend to a second night. The rooms are all different and greatly appointed; and service is impecable.

The place was clean and the owner, Javier, was always most welcoming and accomodating.

Views from all the rooms in the first floor are great. We had to move rooms as we extended our stay, but both Doña Blanca and La Fabula were great rooms with lovely views.

The location is perfect as it is in town but one of the few places where you can drive right up to the hotel and park within 100 meters.

We are so pleased we chose the Castillo el Collado as our home when we were on a wine tour in Rioja.

The hotel has been with the same family for 65 years and is now run by Señor Javier Acillona. We were given a warm welcome and taken to our room La Fabula (the Fable in English) which was on the first floor at the front of the house with a tiny balcony.

Senor Acillona was very helpful in his recommendations of bodegas to visit and telephoned ahead to make an appointment for us as is the way in this area although we did drop in on a couple of others, not for the tour, but for tasting and buying.

Sadly we were only there for two nights, but enjoyed breakfast and dinner on both days. The clams as an appetiser, were excellent. There is a terrace just outside the restaurant where you can take your meals if you wish.

There is no car park at the hotel, but you can drop off which is what we did with our wine rather than leaving it in the car, just a couple of flight of stairs down to the edge of town.

We can't recommend Hotel Collada highly enough for an intimate break in this beautiful town.

This was our (wife and I) first trip to Rioja and we were very happy to have stayed in the Castillo El Collado. We stayed in the "Love and Madness" room for 4 nights and the views from that room were amazing. Javier was excellent in his service and hospitality. He always seemed to go above and beyond what you would expect for service. When we arrived, he refused to allow us to carry our bags up to our room. He did it all himself (and there is no elevator!). He even found us some packing tape when we were trying to secure our wine purchases for shipment home. We ate in the restaurant the night we arrived and the food was very good with many choices on the menu. Breakfast was also plentiful and reflected the regional culture. Javier and us each spoke very little of each others language, but we managed to communicate well. Javier made you feel very comfortable in overcoming the language barrier. The hotel is just outside the walls of La Guardia so it is very quiet and a 2 minute walk into the town. During the evening at times, there were some issues with barking dogs in the distance (Javier said they were hunting dogs), but nothing that I couldn't sleep through and it wasn't constant all night. All in all, it was a great stay, wonderful little hotel that immersed you into the local culture. Our kudos to Javier and his staff. Highly recommend it to other travelers to the region.

We stayed at the Castillo el Collado for 2 nights. The views from the Love and Madness room were absolutely amazing - along with the shower and clawfoot tub! Couldn't have beat that. The only reason we would not give this 5 stars is that the bed was incredibly hard (and I like hard beds) and the pillows were well-used and needed replacing.

Room Tip: I can't imagine any room has better views than the Love & Madness room!

Rarely is a hotel truly special, so much a part of its locale that you can't imagine that place without thinking of where you stayed. And rarely is a place this special so affordable.

Hotel Castillo El Collado offers brilliant, personalized service, wonderful food and lots of extras. I hope it's not an endangered species given the contemporary chain-managed hotels beginning to sprout along with the temperanillo vines in Rioja. I love staying someplace that isn't huge and doesn't feel like it could just as easily be in Hong Kong as in Spain. On this trip, I visited with a friend, and our room (Los Navegantes or The Sailors) was a great choice (with two beds), but a number of the inn's recently updated rooms would be perfect for a romantic getaway.

At the heart of the experience is the amazing Javier, the innkeeper and owner, whose Old World charm never falters. He should train every innkeeper.

Pros:
Excellent food - besides being an amazing innkeeper, Javier himself is an excellent chef - adapting his mother's and grandmother's traditional recipes. If you dine there, and it's very worth it, Javier usually offers at least one dish as an "invitation" (complimentary). At the center of Rioja, Laguardia is the area's most charming medieval hill town. The castle - a historic family seat moved here in the early 20th century - occupies a great spot at the top of the hill, just outside an entrance to the walled town. The tower has awe-inspiring views of the Cantabria mountains and valley below. The traditional dining room is old-school-elegant and the terrace is a great place to enjoy a glass of wine. The five rooms that I was able to see were good sized and had large luxury bathrooms. Javier is one of the hotel's greatest assets - he will arrange whatever you wish and seems to anticipate things that might make your stay more pleasant before you have even thought to make it a request.

Cons:
Our room could have benefitted from updated linens and a new mattress, but we were very comfortable. (I'd love to go back!)

Room Tip: I saw and liked the updated rooms: Love and Madness, Dona Blanca, and La Paloma. La Paloma does not...

The location is great and the owner Javier is kind. Somehow though, we left with a slightly bad taste in our mouths. Why?
Maybe because we felt a little pressured to eat dinner there on the night we arrived. (While making the hotel reservation, Javier said it was "usual" to do that, long pause, did I want to do that?)
Maybe because we're used to having good ingredients for breakfast. This was like eating at grandpa's house and you're supposed to be thankful, even though you feel you are shoveling bad quality stuff into your mouth.
To be fair, the spread looked inviting: OJ, different types of embutidos or salames, biscuits/crackers, oranges, apples, bananas, a sliced 1/2 baguette (for 3 people), 3 slices of thin cheese, homemade apricot jam. Coffee and tea were offered. I am not ecstatic about it because the OJ tasted like frozen, reconstituted stuff we bought in cylinders during the 70s and 80s, before we knew better stuff was available. The coffee was like a strongish Americano. It was 10€ each. For less than that much, we could have had (and later did): freshly squeezed OJ, un "cortado" and a delicious croissant at a nearby café. I would not stay here again, though I wish Javier very well.

Hotel Castillo El Collado was a bit of a pig to find. But when we did it was worth the wait. A fine establishment which was actually a castle attached to the walls of the historic medieval city of laguardia. The hotel owner 'javier' is a man on a mission. His mission is to make you stay in his 10 bedroomed castle as comfortable as possible. He waited on us hand and foot. Our bedroom ( more a suite) for 120€ Was fabulous, huge, spotlessly clean and well maintained. Breakfast was amazing in a lovely setting. Would visit again.

Room Tip: all of the bedrooms are excellent.....
