“Heaven for wine lovers!”
Reviewed October 10, 2012 via mobile

Stayed for a weekend with friends and family. Although a bad start as they didn't have a room for us due to their computer error fortunately there was a spare room. We didn't have a balcony room although it was very nice with an awesome view of the vineyards! The hotel was very modern and the staff very friendly, part of this great vineyard in he Rioja region it was near perfect. The only thing letting the hotel down was the food which without going into great detail was best average and the fact hey didn't have a nice bar area downstairs where you could sit outside.

The caves and wine tour were fab and only a short ride to a gorgeous walled village.

All in all a great location for wine enthusiasts and a very nice hotel.

We have visited this hotel and area four times and love it - we have our own niche of wine in the cellar. The hotel is a delight with a breathtaking view, especially if you have a room with a terrace. Unfortunately, the kitchen is the size of your average utility room and can not cater for the demands on it. Last year there was a buffet style breakfast which worked, but they have changed it to waiter service that clearly does not! The coffee machine is not commercial, it is one that you have to individually open a packet, place in machine then wait for the water to filter through, taking an average of 5 mins per cup! Consequently, after several requests none of our party of six received a cup of coffee! The waiter service was just so bad. We booked into the same small restaurant for evening meal, where we had a choice of 3 taster style menus that were all but the same. We thought it highly amusing that for the party of six we all had to choose the same menu! Our amusement faded when the first hot course was not just cold but chilled and inedible. The next serving of tinned asparagus that had seen better days made us get up and leave. Admittedly, we had enjoyed a couple of glasses of the wonderful wine before we sat down, but we were embarrassed by the silent library atmosphere of the place and felt compelled to leave. We half expected Basil Fawlty to appear!!!
On a more positive not, the reception staff were highly apologetic, the hotel is lovely, the rooms boutique style and comfortable and the showers superb! There seems to be so much empty wasted space at ground level, it would be a good idea to make a bigger restaurant, put in a bar, and definitely a bigger kitchen area. All in all it did not spoil the weekend, had a great time even though a little hungry!!

Room Tip: If possible, choose a terrace. There are chairs and table and you can sit with your complimentary bo...

We didn't stay at the hotel but we did take a tour of the bodega. We had the English tour with Silvia who was very informative about the history of the winery and the winemaking process. The tour ended with a tasting of 3 wines from the estate with a chorizo tapa accompaniment. The chorizo served on a roll was very succulent and we found out from Erico in the Reception area that it was made by his dad in his shop in Laguardia village. We sought Erico's dad out and bought some chorizo which he vacuum packed for us to bring back home.Fantastic scenery, excellent tour, recommend.

My wife and I did our honeymoon by car from Madrid to Paris and our first stop north out of the Spanish capital was Laguardia in the heart of La Rioja. We arrived late at night to find a hotel that was very unexpected - and very unique as the rooms are literally built in beside the winery. The Ugarte hotel is quite new and the rooms cozy and modern, that could pass for any 4 star hotel in the city. We had a room with a balcony that is recommended as you are perched up above the valley which is absolutely stunning on a sunny day.
Value for the rooms is reasonable with breakfast and the wine tour which is included.
The staff were pleasant and breakfast wholesome. As we had mentioned it was our honeymoon they had champagne ready for us in our room on the second night (a nice touch). Oh, did I mention that the mini bar in the rooms are free?
The winery itself is incredible, with a huge cellar that can be viewed in full each time you take the elevator, and the wine tour is a must, showing the vintage collections, and the 2000m of tunnels that have been hand dug underground (thank you Miguel). It is easy to say the tasting is the best part of the tour, but absolutely the Ugarte wines are first class. We tried three of their more popular selections and they were all to die for (our favorite was Cinquenta).
A key point for this hotel though is you must have a car, as you are about 1.5kms outside of Laguardia, which itself is a hidden gem and must be visited. Many Spaniards say it is one of the most beautiful towns in the country.
As mentioned we decided to stay at Ugarte an extra night and visit Bilbao only during the day before heading to San Sebastien, and we did not regret it. Although the valley is quiet, that is what makes it charming and if you are lucky with weather like we were, take your time to drive around the area, you will see it is a very special place.

the place is wonderful, really is excellent standard of room etc.
howeevr their is nothing to do here except a wine tour and they would benefit from a couple of outdoor benches to enjoy the amzaing view!
we looked out on the vineyards from the room and as you came out of our room we had the views of the cellar in the hall way which is pretty special.
only issue was it be good if they had a few more activities there, such as lunch you can order as we would sit in the main resturants reception area and all the staff would eat but when i queried if we could eat it seemed an inconvienet time.
the reason i say nothing to do is because we were minus a car ue to driving license issue and if there had been some outdoor benches we'd of been content.
the food both evenings of resturant were spectqcular, we would of walked to local town but it rained that 2nd evening we planned so we couldnt go!! the hotel is so exclusive we had the resturant to ourselves one ngiht, also the receptionist serves your food.

overall we had a fabulous time, if we do go back id like to have a car and maybe stay just one night!!

Room Tip: any room will be excellent choice!!
