“Amazing view, but give the restaurant a miss”
Reviewed August 17, 2012

Take the frequent S1 or S2 service to Uetliberg from Zurich's main station and in 25 minutes you are taking in a breathtaking view of the city, its lake and surrounding mountains. There is a viewing platform (not for anyone who doesn't have a head for heights as it means scaling a vertiginous metal stairway) as well as the verandah of a rather pricey restaurant, which when I visited was full of rather forbidding ladies who lunch of a certain age. In the woods that surround the path leading up from Uedliberg station are benches, picnic tables and barbecue areas so you can avoid the crowds up top and drink in the view below in your own tranquil space. The view is genuinely spectacular and is a great start to any visit to Zurich.

“A must-do while in Zurich! Spectacular view!”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

Take the train to Uetliberg from Zurich HB (the main station). Be sure that the train goes all the way to Uetliberg and doesn't stop at the station before. We had to ride all the way back to HB and then take the next train back to that same station, get off, and wait for the train that goes all the way to Uetliberg. After you get to the Uetliberg station, grab some food, fill your water bottle up, and prepare for a hike! The trail is off to the left when you get off- follow it. You'll eventually come up to the viewing plaza and tower. There's a nice restaurant up there and the view from atop the tower is spectacular (especially on a clear day when you can see the Alps)! You can see all of Lake Zurich and Zurich itself, not to mention the serene countryside on the other side of the mountain. After taking in the view, continue your hike towards Felsenegg; it's about 3 miles or so. There, you will find a cablecar going down the mountain which offers another thrill! Once at the bottom you can catch the train back to HB by following the signs or venture down to the lake and catch the boat back. This was my favorite thing to do in Zurich and very cheap! You can buy roundtrip tickets (train and cablecar) at the main station or just buy the tickets as you go! We had 24 hour Zurich cards (around 9 CHF) which gave us access to all public transportation in the zone.

“Hike up Uetliberg”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

This is a free, must-experience attraction if you like the outdoors. You can get to the beginning of a nice series of trails by taking tram 13 from Zurich HB all the way to the end, Albisguetli. Walk past the bathroom and dog park on your right, and continue straight on the sidewalk for about 3 minutes. You will come upon a map and a series of hiking trails. The short trail up Uetliberg is the main one in the center with lampposts that are on at night. I went during the day as I was by myself. It was very safe and many locals were hiking, walking, and running along the trails. It is a steep, gravel path with a few stairs on very steep parts. The steep part ends with an overlook and restaurant on the right. Continue past, and take the stair way on the right. That brings you to another restaurant/hotel and an observation tower you can climb. Overall, the hike and observation tower takes about an hour. Bring water as it is strenuous at times. The view is unbelievable - you can even see snow on the Alps in the summer. There is an easy way to go up to the observation tower without the hike - but the hike was excellent if you can manage it.

“A must visit in good weather”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

Beautiful views of Zurich and the lake, lovely hikes in nature and good restaurants to boot.

Easy to get to by rail and included in the ZürichCARD package. The ZürichCARD is a discounted travel card allowing access to all Zurich public transport and museums. The current 24 hour option costs CHF20 and the 72 hour option CHF40.

“Lake views”
Reviewed April 8, 2012

Very easy to get to with the train. We found out from our hotel that there is a pass called the "Nuni-Pass", 24 Francs for one day, travel anywhere in Zurich. We used it to go to both the Rheinfalls and Uetliberg. anyway, the train stops right at the path up to the (Free!) lookout tower. The views of the city and the lake were amazing! It was a fairly clear day, so we could somewhat see the Alps. But when it's really clear out, I imagine the view would be even more dramatic.

You can also hike up to Uetliberg (takes quite a long time) and walk along the Planetenweg, which has scale models of the sun and the planets.

Trains arrive and leave every half hour, so plan accordingly.
