“A Great Place for a Quiet Vacation”
Reviewed July 12, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

I found this cottage hard to rate, for while most aspects meet and usually exceed expectations, there are things that some people will find difficult. However, to give Keeper’s Cottage anything less than five stars would be churlish.

As mentioned by others, the welcome was wonderful: warm; friendly; homemade bread and cake; milk and jam in the refrigerator; fruit on the side; and a bottle of decent wine on the table. The cottage is well decorated and the whole property was lovely and warm. The open-plan kitchen and lounge area is small but adequate and the two sofas ensure comfortable seating for up to four adults.

The variety of animals in the yard is a delight, even if the peacock’s call sounds like someone trying to strangle a cat. And it is perhaps best not to mention Christmas in front of the turkeys.

So why was it so hard to rate? Well, I’ve uploaded a picture of the upstairs bedroom when it is made up with a double bed and a look at that shows one of the problems. Getting into bed is good preparation for the Beamish Museum drift mine but at Beamish they provide hard hats! It is impossible to take a manly position in front of the toilet without adopting the posture of a great ape.

Now, many people rent a cottage like this to get away from civilisation and for those the lack of any mobile signal will only add to the charm of the place. There is WiFi; it is slow but effective. One could say that the best reception is in the lounge but in truth the only reception is in the lounge.

If you arrive in a small overloaded car you will have problems with the track but it is possible to dodge most of the potholes.

Just in case you get the wrong impression, we had a great time and I would happily recommend this to almost everyone, with the exception of a six-foot plus male teenager!

“Perfect remote hideaway, ideal for walking Hadrians Wall.”
Reviewed March 17, 2016 for a stay in March 2016

A beautifully presented cottage, everything you might need is included & the owner is a short distance away should you need anything.
The cottage was lovely & warm, superbly decorated.
Flowers, wine & homemade cake, what a welcome!
The area is ideal for walking especially if you want to walk Hadrians Wall, the views are fantastic, nearby Hexham had all the shops you needed.
Local pub was good too.
Definitely recommend.

“Quiet retreat (apart from the peacock) with easy access to lovely walks.”

Nice to have a welcome pack - flowers, wine, fresh baked bread etc.
It was as described, excellent directions by email from the owner, though found the all encompassing kitchen/dining/living room a bit small, though we had lovely weather and enjoyed sitting out.
It was ideally situated for local walks from the cottage; our hostess pointed out the way to Green Lough, a super walk with a hide.
It was only a shorty drive to Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda so well worth the visit, excavation ongoing and the staff so cheerful and helpful in explaining their progress with a superb museum. We had a fabulous walk to Sycamore Gap along side the Wall, a well as several visits to the Twice Brewed pub!
The Physic Garden on the way to Corbridge was a hidden gem, and Hexham Abbey and museum recommended too.
An ideal place to explore the local area - used less than 1/2 tank of diesel the whole week, but beware the pot holes on the track, and the noise of the beautiful peacock!

I couldn't recommend this enough from start to finish it was a perfect weeks holiday. The cottage is very well equipped, the four poster bed was a dream to sleep in & after a long day walking is was so good to come back to a lovely wood burner & jacuzzi bath to sooth away any aches.
Thou you are off the beaten track you are still able to get to places either walking to Hadrians Wall or a short drive to the pub.

A big thank you to David & Jane for making our stay so comfortable.Jane's kitchen is a must i even brought something back for our dinner the day we left.

“Luxury getaway”

Keepers Cottage is all that we hoped for and more. The cottage is gorgeous and luxurious having been finished to a very high standard. Location wise it is spot on. Truly secluded and "off the beaten track" yet right by a fantastic section of Hadrian's wall, Vindolanda and Houseteads Roman forts and museums (you can walk to all of the. If you're feeling adventurous - we did!). If you're keen cooks like us you'll appreciate a well set up kitchen and the ability to stock up on essentials at the Tesco Extra, Waitrose or Aldi in Hexham (an easy 20min drive) or Sainsburys or Coop in Haltwhistle (a little closer).

As for the welcome, it couldn't have been warmer. A bouquet of red roses, bottle of wine and home baked cake greeted us on Valentine's day. The fridge had been stocked with milk, butter and jam and bathrooms with complimentary toiletries. Little touches which make all the difference. David and Jane are excellent hosts and staying at Bonnyrigg hall was a wonderful week's getaway. We even managed to hijack their gorgeous dog for an afternoon's walk! I rarely write reviews but feel compelled to extol the virtues of a holiday at Keepers Cottage.

“A wonderful cosy weekend, great location, and a very friendly welcome.”
Reviewed November 2, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

We chose the cottage because of its proximity to Hadrians wall and all the walking around this fantastic part of Britain. After a long 6 hour drive we arrived to a warm welcome from the owner who couldn't have been more helpful, and a menagerie of chickens, turkeys, quail, and very friendly dog, The cottage is really well finished and is really well equipped and was so relaxing after a days hiking. We had a great week, and would recommend it to anyone who loves peace and tranquility, and the great outdoors.
