“We eat at the Bowes regularly.”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

We often eat at the Bowes, in fact we are there tomorrow for my birthday meal. Would heartily recommend it. The service and food are excellent and the manager is very helpful. Will be there again. A very friendly pub with the locals being quite interesting.

The present proprietor has had the place now for four months and he impressed us with his enthusiasm, genuine interest in our well-being, and attention to detail. He offered advice on places for us to visit in the area. The traditional English breakfast (that he cooked himself) was excellent. The room was newly renovated and comfortable. The little village of Bardon Mill is idyllic and picturesque. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Our room had a double and bunk bed so great for families.

Yes,the place is under new management and yes there is a long way to go to achieve excellence but on the strength of our recent visit this place may be worth a try.
We were made most welcome by an ever enthusiastic mine host who always seemed to be on duty , the place was spotless and in a great location for Hadrians Wall and surrounding countryside but the long period of mis management and under investment cannot be overlooked.
If the current enthusiasm continues,if the direction of the business plan is clear, if more investment is injected then this place has the potential to be a first rate Inn and hostelry, but the key word is " IF "

Bardon Mill is an extremely pretty village, with much going for it. It is an obvious stopping point for Hadrian's Wall, particularly as the railway runs through it. The Bowes 'Hotel' is a nice looking building (from the outside) and fit's the 'charming country pub' image..until you go in. It is cold and without any atmosphere. This is such a shame as it would not take much to turn this around and make it attractive to locals and visitors alike. The pub has had numerous changes of management in the last few years but never has it changed for the better. Maybe one day it will, but for now if I could give it less than one star I would. Sadly there are no other pubs in walking distance. Please also bear in mind that I am not reviewing this as a hotel - I have not stayed here - just as a pub.

Poor. Friendly and obliging owners, but clueless. Alex Polizzi would have a field day. The hotel overall: needs drastically updating! Carpets stained, bed sheets did not smell fresh, taps not working, poor temperature control on the showers, very cold rooms, burnt breakfast, no evening food despite the rack of lamb shown on the Bowes web site. Look forward to seeing this hotel on "Hotel Inspector."

I am truly disgusted by the attitude displayed by this hotel. My colleague was booked into this hotel for two nights via laterooms.com, a website which takes full payment upon booking. When I tried to contact the hotel directly in order to book him in for a further night, I received zero contact despite numerous attempts by phone and email over the course of two days. I eventually had to resort to booking him in via laterooms again. The icing on the (terrible) cake was that at the end of his stay, my colleague was made to pay for the room with his own credit card, despite the fact that we had already pre-paid in full. Even now when I am attempting to resolve this and receive a refund for the duplicate-payment, I am being ignored.

Friendly welcome and a pretty outlook over the green - very quiet village. Comfortable bed and breakfast served at a time to suit. A few updates needed to the hotel and attention to detail would have made this an ideal stay but there were a few negative points - no food available on the evening of arrival although the next village is just a short drive away - Very small bathroom just a shower and loo - minute handbasin in the room with no accessible mirror. I believe the new owners are working on improvements however. The breakfast was good but no orange juice or cereals offered - would have expected this for the price. I'd stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have a pleasant view
