Portugal has so much nature and history to offer tourists if you are just prepared to travel away from the coast and liaise with the locals

It is a long but scenic drive, you keep wondering when you will finally arrive - don't be deterred by the gate and signs which imply that you are about to enter private land. Read carefully and you will see that you are allowed to proceed.

The gorge is pretty dramatic, especially with the exceptionally high water levels when we visited. The really great thing was that we were the only people there which added to the experience. It is certainly a beautiful place.

Definitely best approached from the west, where you can drive close to the river - the eastern approach looked much more tricky with a steep descent on foot.

It was a very long drive, really long! However, if you have the time and enjoy natural beauty, don't miss out on visiting this place.
