“Cook it yourself”
Reviewed August 8, 2013

Ate here on our first night staying in a house in Siorac and it turned out to be our most expensive meal over the whole holiday. The food is good but not great and you can get far better value else where.
The buffet starter choice could be better, and you cook your meat yourself as it is served on a hot stone which does mean you get your meat/fish cooked how you like it.
The English owner gives a pleasant un-intrusive service.
Overall a pleasant experience but I believe it to be a little over priced, but the setting is very nice over looking the river.

friendly , clean, knowledgable and very very good value. We will return to this gem of a place right by the wonderful river. Central to the beautiful sights chateaux's and wines of the region. British couple and their family are the proprietors, the room was clean spacious with character, modern but french, a view from the terrace, internal and external dining. Food was fresh filling well served and cooked ,good local produce.
Car park private and safe.

Room Tip: 22 was nearest the river.

Fantastic setting, terrific hosts in Meryl and Chris. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The evening meals cooked using hot stones were unusual and very entertaining as well as delicious. Definitely recommend this charming hotel and hope to be back soon.

My wife and I stayed at L'escale for two nights in mid-September while enroute from Sarlat to Bergerac by car. L'escale is located on the banks of the Dordogne River and has ample and easily reached parking. It has a large patio overlooking the river which would have been an excellent place to have lunch. Unfortunately, the patio was closed until late afternoon.

Our room at L'escale was adequate.

Dinner on the patio, cooked on a hot stone, was excellent.

I did not stay overnight, but I had a fantastic lunch on the terrace restaurant overlooking the Dordogne. The food was very good - I had the steak, but my friend also enjoyed the salmon - and the service was fast and friendly. About 27 euros for lunch, including wine and coffee. Highly recommended.

I've stayed at L'escale on more than one occasion simply because it's probably one of the best hotel experiences I've enjoyed in France. I've visited Paris for pleasure and business, the Meditteranean coast for the same and yet none rival L'escale. The location is sublime, the service is perfectly attentive but not intrusive, the hotel and facilities clean and welcoming but not sterile, I could live here! The 'stone' evening meal is a real feature, the guest selects from a menu and 'cooks' their chosen meal on a heated volcanic stone, tasty and entertaining! I sat on the balcony terrace, over looking the Dordoyne river, bathed in a spectacular sunset. I intend to book and stay again this year and look forward to meeting with the hosts once again. My only selfish reservation is that, while I wish to promote L'escale as it deserves to be, I don't want this fabulous Hotel to alter it's award winning recipe as a consequence of becoming too busy. I recommend L'escale to all, business, families and everything in between.

Room Tip: book blommin' early just to get a room!

We stayed here for 2 weeks and didn't want to leave. The studio had everything you could want including a large comfortable bed!! Every morning we took our coffe down to the river, 100 yds away, and could have stayed there all day watching the herons. little egrets, king fishers, fishermen and the fish jumping. They say location is everything and apart from the river, L'Escale is perfect for visiting all the tourist spots and for finding those wonderful little places not advertised. Meryl, Chris, LLoyd & Eden were perfect hosts happy to help with tips and suggestions and always had time to talk. The hot rocks in the restaurant were fabulous and you could not beat that view! Thank you for a fantastic holiday!
