“Nice friendly hotel with superb meals”
Reviewed February 24, 2011

We stayed here for one night with our 3 children, really accomodating as it is difficult to find a room that will sleep 5 people. The room was en suite and was nice and clean, comfortable beds and a quiet nights sleep. We dined in the restaurant and the food was brilliant, I am a picky eater but couldn't fault the food, really good quality. Breakfast the next day was cooked to order and included fruit and cereal etc. Glynis and Trevor, the owners are really friendly and welcoming and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Myself and a work colleague stayed at this hotel for a few nights and we were well looked after. The owners are so friendly and they make the best breakfast to start your day. The hotel has a great chef serving a good menu all reasonable priced. I had a pleasant stay at this hotel and if i was visiting the area again i would stay again.

I can only surmise that previous reviews were tired out mountain bikers who didn't notice the cheap, tired out decor and not very clean either. Went here as they advertised free wi fi - nowhere to put a laptop. Rather aggressive male owner, suggested doing my computer work in the bar lounge! Dull and dingy surroundings, no wonder it has no star rating from scottish tourist board.

We were spoiled with the weather which i think helped. However the staff at the Grapes were lovely and the food was reasonablly priced and tasty, would definitely pop in again if we are down in the Borders again

On the way to Kielder or Newcastleton forests for biking? Then stay here. Absolutely fantastic value and very comfortable. Our hosts understood our biking needs and were very friendly & helpful. Great food in the evening and as much breakfast as you need. Warm & cosy and basically on the doorstep of some of the best mountain bike trails around. Don't miss trying the new cross border routes.

The wife and I enjoyed our two nights - and days - at the Grapes Hotel. Probably the best hotel experience - ever (and I've been around). The most important thing; very friendly people, who could take a joke and throw it back with a smile. Good room, excellent restaurant, wonderful bar(s).

We'll be back (even though it's bit of a distance from our native Norway).

We were made to feel welcome right from the start. The staff and owners were all very nice and helpful. We had an en-suite double room which was clean and tidy and the bathroom was very large but only had a shower cubicle which was fine but could have been a little bigger. There was plenty of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and milk which was enough for 3 drinks each and a bottle of mineral water.
The bar was nice and the beer prices very reasonable. You can eat in the bar or restaurant and I would definately advise that you do, the food was excellent and very good value for money. Breakfast was the same and i'm sure the meat must come from local farmers/butcher none of this supermarket cheap rubbish. All this for £55 per night B&B for both of us. You won't get a better place to stay in GB for this price.
Newcastleton is a pretty little village with a lovely walk along the river bank especially if you have a dog and Kielder Water is only 30 minutes away by car. For bikers, this is a perfect place to stop over before heading off into the highlands.
