“Friendly staff, very good food, average room.”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

We were on a Borders tour and stayed at The Grapes for 2 nights. Taking rooms 2 and 4, one of our party had been before and said he felt it had gotten a bit shabbier since the previous stay. That said, we were given a warm welcome and taken directly to our rooms. We stayed in #2 which had 2 single beds that were truly singles -- very narrow and quite short. They were, unfortunately, also very uncomfortable with bedsprings poking out and little padding throughout. However, that is where the complaints end.

Everything else made for a great stay. The staff couldn't have been more accomodating and the food was top flight. We ate breakfast in the morning (included in the room) and were delighted with the selection of hot and cold. It was substantial enough to skip lunch while we were out exploring. Dinner both nights we took in the dining room, and again the food was spot on. Good selections, locally sourced foods, huge portions and friendly service.

The bathroom was a bit peculiar, but once we figured out the idiosincracies, it became more amusing than annoying. The toliet made great whooshing noises followed by something akin to a blender, and the shower punp engaged every 15 seconds while being used, but the water was always hot and plentiful. We did try to limit our showers and flushing after 10pm to respect the other guests, and it seemed this was an unspoken consideration of all the other rooms around us, as the hotel was very quiet otherwise.

for the techies -- wireless internet was provided free, and you will get a chuckle at the password when you inquire at the bar. Mobile phone signals are almost non-existent and there are no telephones in the rooms.

Newcastleton is a lovely small village with a few services, but if in need of a bit more, a visit to Longtown or Wawick ("Hoyk") will prove useful. And the secenery is breathtaking!

Room Tip: While there are only 8 rooms here, you may want to have a look at the room before taking it. Room #2...

During our 2 week stay near Newcastleton we had a few meals at The Grapes, all of which were excellent both in quality and value. The light bite menu (before 6.30pm) at under £7 is amazing value for money, with no reduction in quality (or meal size, as far as we could see). We also had a more formal meal in the dining room which, again, was of the highest standard. The couple in charge were so nice and friendly, and the chef was great with a member of our family who needed a gluten free option. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. Thank you to all at The Grapes, and we hope to be back soon.

Lovely inn. Happy to report another great scottish hotel. It is a little dated but the breakfast more than makes up for it. Its not a "Man vs food" thing nor should it be just great quality. Every item felt like it had been chosen for its quality and not its price.
Also have to say the lady who presented it did so with care and pride.
Makes a big difference to me and will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 5 was big and bright.

4 of us on a cycling trip stayed here overnight last week. We got a warm welcome. Our room was just as advertised - very comfortable - suited us very well. After a strenuous day, we wanted an early meal and were a bit doubtful about the light bites early evening menu. We had no reason to worry. helpings at The Grapes are generous (even for hungry cyclists). We enjoyed an excellent meal, a comfortable, quiet night's sleep and a breakfast to set us up for the day. Our landlord sent us off with packed lunches. Thank you to all the staff at The Grapes. We were made very welcome and will stay here again if we are back in The Borders. I would highly recommend this place to cyclists who are looking for a comfortable stay, good food and a safe bike park.

It's does what it says on the tin! Good wholesome food, excellent value with warm and friendly service. It's not your posh pub grub, but it's hot, good value and home made. Staff went out of their way to accommodate us on a busy night.
