“Great location, relaxing holiday”
Reviewed September 19, 2010

We enjoyed our stay at Sinbad - it was quiet, clean and the staff, if not over-effusive were friendly enough. Especially compared with some of the other hotels in Ibiza! It's always difficult to get 'four star' treatment in Ibiza without paying an absolute fortune.

Food was good, although limited in terms of when you can eat. Pool was quite small but deep and nicely located by the sea. Rooms were clean if a bit old fashioned in terms of decor. We go to Ibiza every year and will definitely return to Sinbad.

Upsides:
• As all other forum comment note it’s truly a case of location, location, location. Serene, quiet bay just around the headland from the bustle of Ibiza town. Only a 40 minute walk to the centre of the shopping district. The bay itself is magical, with a million little yachts & boats moored across the bay/ Hotel has perfect position at quiet side of the bay. Totally recommend a sea-view therefore.
• The breakfast: very generous breakfast buffet. Although as you will read below, you have to do all the work yourself, and be warned the waiting staff really will whip away a full plate of food if you should happen to leave it to fill up on orange juice or coffee.
• The lobby, bar are has a fairly decent contemporary design which bodes well on first impression, especially with the glorious bay view through the windows behind the space.
• The pool: clean, and a grand size if you want to stretch those swimming arms for some exercise. The spa area also a decent space, Very clean and probably the newest, best fitness machines I have seen in a long time.

Downsides:
• The hotel staff. This was the sorry heart of our to stay at Simbad. From the moment we arrived till when we left we found the reception & restaurant staff to be rude, unhelpful and dismissive. It did not help that the reception area itself has a number of large screens which uncomfortably show CCTV cameras of public areas in the hotel. This strange lobby feature combined with the severe attitude of the staff gave the hotel a worrying air of a low-security prison (but in a great location ……)
• Another off-putting element was the fact that the Talamanca bay seems to be a location for some of the islands sewage disposal, This meant that on a number of days or at strange time across the day the toxic sweet smell of toilet matter would waft over the pool area.
• The rooms. Still honouring the 1970s in design and fittings. The television ha only one English speaking channel, and that the learning English Spanish channel.
• The safe – an old fashioned lock safe in the room. The hotel charge over 2.5 Euros per night to hire the safe.

I chose this hotel based on the reviews posted on Trip Advisor. My experience was consistent with the positive reviews. The hotel is a solid four star. It's not a luxury resort but it is good and clean and well located. A good value for the money. It does not really have a beach, but is on the water in a beautiful location. The desk staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. One warning. Although the hotel advertises free parking, it really only has about eight spots. There is street parking available, but it is a congested area. I would not suggest this hotel if you are renting a car and need parking.

I know Ibiza well and think this is a great location to stay in. Talamanca is a quiet area with access to a beach but close to the action in Ibiza town (a longish walk but doable). There are also a number of good places to eat near the hotel if you don’t want to venture far. There’s a nice paved walkway along the beach which turns into a boardwalk as you get closer to the new Marina Botafoch. The Simbad reception, bar, restaurant and terrace areas are really impressive. Modern clean lines with a totally magnificent view over the bay over towards old town of Ibiza. Bedrooms feel as though they belong to a different building as they are very standard which could be improved enormously by some new soft furnishings. There are some old sofas left on upper floors and one can imagine that an owner resisted throwing them out when the ground floor was refurbished. They should throw out the old sofas! Pictures on the hotel website are accurate. However despite being very ordinary the bedroom was comfortable with very good storage space. Bathroom excellent with a high pressure shower. Effective air conditioning. Housekeeping staff are exceptional – room was kept incredibly clean. Views over sea would be lovely and probably worth paying a bit extra for though we were happy with our room on the street side as we found it nice and quiet. I also really liked that the corridors had carpet running down the middle which cut down considerably on noise from people walking back to their rooms. Breakfast (if you can get there well before 10.30 and it is ALL whipped away by 10.30) is very good. A good choice of fruit, pastries, cold meats and cheeses. Freshly squeezed orange juice was literally on tap and the coffee (make it yourself in a somewhat scary looking machine) was the best I’ve ever had at a hotel buffet. There was also a hot counter where you could get grilled sandwiches, fried eggs or omelettes made to order. The only lack was poor generic cereals that bore no resemblance to the better known brands they were emulating. The attitude of the staff in the restaurant at breakfast also left a lot to be desired. They clearly felt that guests were a nuisance and something to be cleared away as quickly as possible. I actually did see one guest coming back with a coffee to find that all the food he’d spent the previous 10 minutes assembling had been thrown away. He barely got an acknowledgement. Trollies were wheeled around aggressively without a thought for the potential danger to guests or left across the main walkway to block people’s passage. It was really strange as staff in other locations – bar, reception, housekeeping – were very good. We did not eat dinner in the hotel so cannot comment on that. There is a pool on the beach side of the hotel. It always seemed to be possible to get sun loungers (a pity that they are the non adjustable sort) even in August when we were there and there were quite a few parasols. The terrace around the pool is very poor though, badly finished, partly stone paving and partly just cement. The stone edge of the pool is not finished at all. Although I liked that the water wasn’t over chlorinated I was concerned to note that the tiles above water level in the pool looked very dirty. They were actually cleaned during my stay and I suspect this just needs to be attended to more often. The hotel claims to have parking but this is actually just a few spaces in front on the street which are usually full. We did always find an on street parking place but it sometimes took a bit of driving around the one way system here which was a bit irritating. Overall I would stay here again as I love the location, the room was comfortable and by comparison it was good value for money as this is crazily expensive Ibiza. If they finished off the pool properly, got adjustable sun loungers, gave the rooms a decor update and sent the breakfast staff to charm school it would be absolutely perfect.

This is with out question the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. Not only is it in a terrible location and run down (with the exception of the lobby), but the staff and owners are rude and un-hospitable. There was nothing that was requested that was provided without attitude. Requests for cabs were ignored, promises for reservations were not kept, and the food was disgusting. When we tried to bring a guest to the hotel, we were told guests are not allowed. Guests not allowed? That being said, I've never enjoyed a destination more. Ibiza is an incredible place and should be spent with good people and not at terrible hotels. Stay somewhere else.

This is a 4 star hotel with a fantastic position facing over the bay of Talamanca, just outside Ibiza town (Eivissa). Overall, a lovely holiday with wife & 4 adult kids. To keep this simple, I'll summarise the key points.

PLUSES
Clean rooms & hotel.
Good buffet style evening meal with plenty of choice.
Decent breakfast choice – buffet style again (but see below).
Good location, nice pool.
Generally friendly reception staff (especially John from Leeds !!)

MINUSES & things to watch out for

The restaurant has an inflexible mechanism for ordering snacks & some drinks. Some staff will make you go to the other area to order certain things which is annoying and pathetic. However the female restaurant manager was lovely, and I recommend asking her for help if you need it. Complain if you don’t get what you want, where you want it – it IS a 4 star after all.

Breakfast for example – you have to serve yourself with everything – even pots of tea. Very frustrating – they ought to be providing bettter service than this – it takes a good 10 minutes just to get a plateful of stuff to eat – and they don’t seem to have heard of TRAYS either. It all has to be got a bit at a time. Hopeless.

Rooms – the floors are all tiled (& very clean) but noisy if you get someone noisy along the corridor. We were on the 3rd (top) floor, and I suspect the lower floors were noisier still. Maybe put a towel in front of the bottom of the door to reduce the noise ? (Only thought of that on the day we left !!)

One other thing – the musak by the cocktail bar area (outside & in) was awful and spoiled the beauty and peacefulness of the hotel. If you read this, Mr Simbad, I suggest you try turning it off. I think you’ll find more people will want to sit there & buy your expensive drinks.

Expensive taxis – with the pound to euro almost one-to-one these days (bearing in mind commission adds to the poor exchange rate) we found the taxis in particular, incredibly expensive. Starter rate is almost 5 euros (5 quid) and to Eivissa town, just 15 mins away by taxi, it cost about £8 each way, including a small tip.

Be Warned, taxis will only carry 4 people maximum, by law. If you are more than 4 (as we were) you will need another taxi per 4 people.

Hippy Market Es Cana – about £30 to get there in the taxi, plus £30 back !! worth a trip, but go in the morning when it’s cooler & with less of a scrum.

San Antonio – another £30 taxi ride away, to see a lovely sunset I admit, but I’m starting to wish I’d hired a car.

Eivissa old town – lovely, the castle (alt vila) is superb, and the shopping areas are busy & pleasant. The tourist information centre, opposite the monument by the marina, is small but has a few brochures of interest.

Just a suggestion – the old town is right at the top of the hill, ask the taxi for Es Soto by the cathedral, and it will take you to the top by the back way, which is a great way to avoid climbing the hill. Most of the shops are at ground level though.

From the Simbad hotel, you can walk across the front of the bay to the marina, (15 mins) and then get a small ferry to Eivissa (3 euros). That was well worthwhile.

Overall – nice hotel, but would prefer to stay somewhere nearer Eivissa next time, as the taxi to everywhere, began to be annoying. There were supposed to be buses, but I don’t recall even seeing one !
