We had a week there in early Feb 2012. The staff were very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. The room was superb - we were offered a choice of three suites and shown them so we could decide. The location is amazing under some beautiful hills and great walking. It is a couple of miles from Campanet where there is a restaurant and small supermarket but a hired car is necessary so you can get round the island. Even though it snowed when we were there (apparently a once in 50 years event) we had a great holiday. Thanks to Kerstan and Patricia for their hospitality. We will be back. Oh and for me - with a dodgy back the beds were suitably firm and comfortable - a great bonus. Some tea making gear in the room rather than going to the Dining room would have made it perfect. We stayed at Monnaber Vell as part of our honeymoon and were very disappointed especially in terms of the poor value of money it offers.

Our suite (Lledoner) was not a proper suite, just a large room. It was situated right next to the main staircase so therefore was noisy especially in the mornings. The room was dark with limited natural daylight due to the windows looking directly into trees. The decor was not in keeping with the history and charm of the beautiful building. For example, the ceiling lights were too modern and clinical, hung on metal wire and appeared cheap as if purchased from Ikea. On the four poster bed the canopy was attached between posts by a cheap flimsy white pole. The pipes under the double sink were exposed which was unsightly and paint was peeling from around the bath. Despite the large size of the bathroom the bath was tiny with no separate shower. The TV system was overly complicated which proved very frustrating. It was inconvenient, and unsafe, to have to remove the key from the light switch in order to lock the doors. The room was definitely not worth the EUR 194 charged. For almost the same price we had a proper suite with different rooms and a private terrace at Sa Tanqueta Hotel in Fornalutx.

Perhaps most disappointing of all for us was the food which was just too simple, rustic and plain. There was no creativity or imagination in the cooking, just a simple piece of meat or fish, well cooked but served with a basic salad and chips, just like you can easily make at home, certainly not special occasion holiday or honeymoon food. The set menu offered no choice and you did not know what would be served for dessert until the dish was set down in front of you. The terrace where dinner is served is absolutely beautiful with possibly one of the best dining views on the whole of the island however the food did not match this beautiful setting.

The system at breakfast was very badly organised. The room is far too small and dark with dishes spread about in diferent locations making it difficult to see all of the available produce. The tables were not even set and there was no waitress service therefore you had to collect your cutlery from the dresser as if in someone's home and bring it to your table on trays as if in a school canteen. The self service coffee machine was located right beside the entrance and above the bowls and dishes which resulted in people standing blocking the entrance and access to the bowls so this area often became crowded and uncomfortable. When you lifted the lid of the hot food container there was nowhere to put it so you had to juggle holding a heavy lid while trying to serve yourself. The produce was not as fresh as breakfast's we experienced elsewhere in Mallorca. The orange juice was not freshly squeezed and the magdalena cup cakes were from a packet which is not acceptable at the prices they charge. The choice of hot food was limited to just two dishes.

The best feature of this hotel is the swimming pool area which really is fantastic. It's a shame that the food and accommodation does not live up to the same standard and the high prices charged.

Room

The difference of the Junior Suite and a double room are explained on our Web Site. The size of your Junior Suite was approximately 48 m2, this is far more than a normal double room. In no place we promise a suite with two separate rooms. The laws by the National Heritage in Majorca are strict and do not allow us to set private terraces or balconies on a façade of the 16th century building. This too, is stated on our Web Site.

There are two large windows in the Lledoner Junior Suite, one in the bedroom, the other in the bath, which is an original wooden window from the 17th century. There are two more than 150 years old trees outside the room, one being a Hackberry Tree (Celtis Australis), and the other one a Peruvian Pepper (Schinus molle). The Hackberry Tree in Catalan in the “Lledoner”, which actually gives the name the room and is one of the most magic trees, there are in Monnaber Vell. Our philosophy is to maintain and pamper those old trees, which make the charm of a Country Hotel. Anyway the view from the Lledoner Suite allows, depending on the time of the year, to see impressive sun- and moonrises towards the Eastern flatlands and over the hills of Arta.

The bed is a construction of Mobles Mestre Paco en Pollença, the most known furniture place in the north of Majorca. The room contains an antique sofa and cupboard (end of 19th century), being valuable museum pieces. The functional head lights seemed to us an elegant solution, for the inclined roof decorated with reed, cut in Campanet. The head light can be regulated by a dimmer. Besides that you have the option of 4 extra warm light lambs, which are made by “Santa & Cole”, one of the most known Spanish designers and not by Ikea.

There is a TV with an external SAT (for SAT Astra) and TDT (Spanish canals) decoder. In order to watch TV, you must push one button on both remote controls, as explained in the info sheet. This allows us to offer more than 50 Spanish and International TV canals.

I respect your review regarding noise of the stairway and the missing separate shower in the bath. We will fix both points in the renovation works this winter.

Quality of food

In the questionnaire you left in hotel you write:
“We enjoyed the wine tasting and the evening food is extremely good value for the money. The service was very friendly…”
This makes a complete different reading to your published review.

Having only 15 rooms and an average of 18 persons having dinner we can´t offer a wide spread menu. We prefer to offer two menus - as published on our Web - with fresh prepared dishes. And I can promise you that there are few place which offer the lamb and suckling pig of better quality as we do, as both products are directly from our farm with an ecologically certificate. It is true that we don’t offer a 3 star Michelin cousin, but we try to offer an honest cousin, with typical Majorcan plates, using mostly local products on a fair price by charging EUR 25 per person. Five days a week we offer themed evenings, which you were not able to appreciate, staying just three nights with us and having dinner two of them.

Breakfast

The area where we offer the breakfast buffet contains a cold part and two hot dishes on a size of approximate 5 m2 with the tees offered apart. There is a double Nescafe machine and an extra coffee machine. In the hotel there is a maximum occupancy of 30 persons and at a few moments it might be crowed. Anyway the outside terrace is very large with plenty of space.

We try to offer local fresh products. In September, when you visited us, we offered fresh grapes, fresh figs and on some days fresh cactus figs directly picked from the trees. The orange harvest in Majorca stars in December and finishes in June, which is when we offer fresh orange juice, harvesting from neighbor farms. My opinion is that it does not make sense in an Agroturismo offering fresh juice from fruits which had been shipping around the World, but offering products in accordance to the season of the year.

Overall

Monnaber Vell is not a luxury hotel, what to try to sell a historical building set in a paradise of nature and piece. Not only in the building we try to maintain the historical substance but we also try to respect the nature which surrounds us.

In the questionnaire you left in the hotel you marked the reception and garden as excellent, the breakfast as bad and the rest as average. You also finish your review with “we have enjoyed our stay but overall do not feel it is worth the price”. I can perfectly accept this, but having in mind, that price, room and service characteristics are in accordance with the publication on our Web.

Monnaber Vell is a perfect stay for people who want to relax and enjoy nature in Mallorca.

Positives: # The rooms (we stayed in Tramuntana and Iuca) are nice and perfectly furnished. # The (infinity) pool is also very nice and of good quality (no bleach used, but other technique), excellent sun lounchers as well and towels are provided. # It is possible to order lunch. # Nespresso machine for breakfast (free) and during the day (EUR 1,80?). # The quality of dinner was a bit variable, but overall good and for a decent price. # Multiple walking routes start at the hotel, others are nearby. # Free wifi. # Receptionist Patricia is very enthusiastic and helpful.

Negatives: # The staff, serving diner, changed often over the days. # In room Iuca we had some trouble with ants. # The agroturismo appeared to be rather popular among families. So account for children playing in the pool, during the holiday season.

But all in all, definitely a recommendation!

We were looking for a small hotel away from the crowds in order to relax and unwind from the day to day stresses of life. In Monnaber Vell we found just what we were looking for. Set in a beautiful environment, in peace and tranquility at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains, with the only sound by the pool being the quiet jingle of bells from the sheep on the hills. No bars, clubs or shops nearby - perfect! It's a very old property which is family owned and has been restored and refurbished with care and attention. Just 15 rooms - we booked a double and were given a lovely suite on arrival with a beautiful view - just lucky on the day I guess. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The owner Karsten, makes a point of trying to meet all guests personally at some stage during the stay. Buffet breakfast was a good selection and was plentiful. We had dinner at the hotel twice and were very pleased with the menu. Suitable for couples, rather than families and due to the remote position a hire car is essential. Would we go back? Without any hesitation - Yes!

Excellent Hotel, fantastic setting, wondeful staff, beautifully maintained and a pool to die for! You need a car although if you took a taxi there are walks and cycling from here that would keep you occupied. The hotel provides bikes free.

Quiet and comfortable hotel, with only a few rooms, in the middle of olive trees ("a
groturismo"). Very authentic, old building that was fully renovated and offers beautiful rooms.
Be aware that the restaurant follows Northern Europe schedule (6 to 8 pm), so we never ate there since we wanted to enjoy Spanish lifestyle!
You need to have a rental car to go to the beaches, but its remote location makes it a charming and romantic place to stay for couples. Not recommended for children.
