Son Pons is a wonderful place in the middle of the countryside. It's location is fantastic, food is great and the staff incredibly helpful. It needs a little work on the grounds, variation in room standards is quite obvious but the location is perfect.
Positives: Claudia, who seems to run the entire place (she isn't the owner though) was simply wonderful. Se is fluent in Spanish, German and English and most likely speaks French too, but I'm not sure. She greets each guest with a warm smile and does all she can to accommodate your needs and also give you advice each and every morning on what to do and where to go. The location is 5 minutes from the M13 highway/motorway, it takes 35 mins from Palma airport and you are within 1 hour of any place on the island. You must have a hire car for this place as it is in the middle of nowhere, which for those seeking solitude is perfect. The small village nearby Buger is tiny and has very few amenities, we went to nearby Sa Pobla for a supermarket for water and supplies. Their are chickens and geese on the site, goats and sheep roams the fields nearby and in every direction you will see olive trees. The pool is cleaned with saltwater and not chlorine, so it's better for your skin. Evening meals are provided each night except Tuesday and Thursdays, we ate at the hotel twice and found the food to be exceptional, very good portions and at €22 each for 3 courses we felt it was very reasonable and very tasty. The rooms are cleaned every day to a high standard.
Negatives: The gardens are a little tatty, however for some this will add to the rustic charm of the place, for us the Russian vine (which in the uk is considered a weed) is everywhere, growing on all walls, trees and buildings. It also surrounded our room. It's just funny as I personally am constantly trying to get rid of this plant from my garden at home, and I come away and am surrounded by it! Our room, number 10, is a small hut at the side of the property, the great thing is that it stands alone, nothing is around us and their are trees overhead. However it's a little small and for €135 a night not as nice as it could be. We moved from our original room number 9 (a junior suite) €159 a night due to noise from the neighbour, this was a downgrade of a room and although a discount was offered and accepted it worked out as €7 per night, which meant we paid for another couple to have an upgrade. Our new room was quiet and peaceful but much smaller. Breakfast was extensive but sadly all week we had no variety. A different type of cooked eggs each day would have been great, hot porridge or juices other an orange and apple.
This is a wonderful place to stay, I recommend staying in the main house if you can, it's got all the charm and history. The peacefulness of the place will relax you in everyway. The staff are very friendly, especially Claudia who works every morning till 3pm and Leticia who works in the evenings and provides all the food. They will do everything they can to help you and personally I think the organisation of the hotel would fall apart without Claudia, she deserves a increase in pay. Enjoy your time there...
