“An oasis in the sun”
Reviewed July 23, 2006

Every description of this hotel that I read before going does NOT do it justice. After spending 8 days traveling from city to city on the Spain mainland we could not wait for some peace and rest on the island of Mallorca. We had done our research and were pretty sure that we had selected a place far away from the crowds and families (as we are a late 20's early 30's couple). After landing, picking up our rent a car with nettocar.net (thank godness because the Hertz line was sickening, I'll review the car experience separately) we drove through Manacor towards, Sant Lorrenc where there are clear signs for Son Penya. As soon as you turn off the highway we knew it was exactly what we were looking for.

We were met by the host and taken on a tour of the grounds (which are small, so it was a short tour). Our room (#7) was right off of the main reception area, which concerened me at first because I was afraid there would be a lot of traffic and noise (this was BEFORE I realized there are only 12 rooms on the entire property). No need for worry. The room is decorated in white and cream and in a modern design. My boyfriend loves architecture and was amazed by the way the room and everything on the grounds blended in with the landcape.

The Room: King size bed, desk, safe where you can set you own lock numbers, mini-bar stocked with drinks, liquor etc. Amazing lighting options (yes options). The bathroom has a separate toilet room, a shower room (with two types of hand held shower hoses, and 4 nozzles) and a jacuzzi tub. They give you plenty of towels, 2 bathrobes and beige beach towels. There is a flat screened TV and satellite TV. Each room also has a semi-private patio with an umbrella and two lounge chairs.

The Grounds: The pool area is beautiful. Its one of those run over the side kind (see photos). Its also salt water, though less salty then the ocean. The dinning area has both inside and outside seating. There are also 3 lounge areas, one with a tv, another inside and one that is outside if you want a change in scenery. There is one computer and free internet access in the lounge attic area.

Dining: Breakfast is included with your stay and is great. It included a buffet option as well as omelet options. There were several kinds of juices, coffees, teas, croissants, rolls, salmon, ham, jelly's, fruit etc. Dinner was the best we had. I think it had a lot of french influences but it was amazing. Not cheap, but worth every dollar spent. We only expected to eat there once or twice and we ate there almost every night. A great, local wine collection as well.

My only suggestion is this place isn't really close (within 10 minutes) of a "happening" city. So if you need city life, and fine dining aside from what they offer it may not work for you. We went to a local market to buy water and snacks for the week, becuase we didn't want to use the minibar for everything.

But honestly this was the most relaxing, serene, most beautiful place that we ever stayed in. The staff was top notch and unobtrusive, the grounds beautiful and the food exquisite. We paid about $200 during busy season and I would recommend it to anyone.

  • Liked — The serenity and modern look
  • Disliked — Maybe if it was closer to a busy town, but then it woudn't be as serene, so NOTHING!
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for the non-touristy beaches, there are some beautiful hidden coves near by.

Well it’s not cheap and not quite perfect but what a fantastic holiday we just had here. In search of a quality tranquil environment in which to chill out Son Penya was exactly what we needed.

The setting is peacefully rural; the only sound we heard was that of the local cockerel, goat bells in the distance and the gentle buzz of crickets (not locusts if you have seen the web site!) It’s only 10 minutes from the nearby coastal resorts though every time we ventured out we found ourselves hurrying back to our haven.

The public areas are beautifully designed, from the outdoor covered sofa area to the outside dining area set under giant sails to the fantastic pool area. Indoors there are a couple of sitting rooms and a small library with a PC with free Internet connection.

And then there are the bedrooms…. Neutral shades (with exposed stonework in ours), modern and understated in style with a massive bed, proper satellite TV (though only a couple of English speaking channels) and a minibar at reasonable prices. And your own private terrace with sunloungers and parasol and because we were upstairs, we enjoyed total privacy. And the bathroom – unusually the whirlpool bath was set between the bathroom and the bedroom and was open to view from both rooms but there was also a limestone wetroom and private toilet complete with an etched glass door in both cases to protect your modesty if required. And finally, twin basins, designer taps, white fluffy bathrobes and towels – complete luxury…

The food was superb – breakfast is included and it is a comprehensive continental breakfast plus whatever you wish from the hot menu. You could eat there in the evenings, again the quality of the food was superb - as good as anywhere else we ate on the island but (and the only gripe we had at all) the service on busy nights could best be described as leisurely. If they could fix this one glitch it would be perfect. There isn’t a bar – you either use your minibar or find someone to fetch you a drink; this is also something that they could improve though I can see the difficulty in a small 12 bedroom hotel in having the facilities of a much larger establishment.

I think it has only been open a few months and when we were there it seemed to be full for the entire 2 weeks, mostly Germans, one French family and a handful of Brits – all lovely people, mostly enjoying their own company and space but there was a nice relaxed vibe to the place. English is not widely spoken by the staff but we got by with our phrasebook, their patience and a bit of German to help us understand each other. The hotel also attracted young families, there were a couple of toddlers and a few older children too and whilst there isn’t a host of activities for the children, the pool and exploring the grounds seemed to provide enough entertainment to keep them happy.

Perfect, no, but will I go back, oh yes!

  • Liked — Design & quality, peace & quiet, excellent food
  • Disliked — Service in dining room on busy nights
  • Tips/Secrets — Book early, this will fill up quickly when the word gets out
