Hotel du Lac de Madine
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed May 29, 2012

This is a Logis hotel situated in the small village of Heudicourt-sous-les-Côtes and within easy walking distance of the large Lac de Madine, a popular leisure area. The reception was cordial and informative. Unfortunately our room (no. 7) was extremely small, with just about enough space to walk around the double bed. The inclusion of 2 chairs at the bench desk didn't help! The bathroom was modern and clean; the toilet was separate, a quirky feature of many small French hotels. There was a small balcony with 2 chairs, overlooking the street; this afforded no privacy whatsoever from the balconies on either side.

WiFi worked well, with a strong signal, though how secure it is might be of concern.

The most appealing aspect of the hotel is its restaurant, which is very elegant. However, as it was a very warm evening, most guests opted to eat outside. This was very pleasant, apart from occasional emissions from inconsiderate smokers. The 3-course set menu @ €28 seemed rather expensive, especially as there were only 2 options for each course. However, the food and presentation were excellent and portions reasonable. A nice unexpected touch was a small "pre-dessert". Wine was expensive, e.g. a half litre carafe of the cheapest local rosé cost €12. Service was somewhat slow but this didn't matter as it was such a nice evening.

We had to leave very early to catch a ferry at Calais so we didn't have breakfast. However, at €11 it seemed expensive, unless it were a very copious buffet.

Room Tip: Avoid room no 7

This Hotel Restaurant we found 15 years ago. We were looking for a peaceful lake and nature.
Lac de Madine is a huge lake, where you can swim or learn to sail in small sailing boats.
For walking or cycle it is the perfect area. Summer time it is very busy. We like Springtime and Fall. Bird watching and fishing the ideal place. Ideal for Picnics.
The Hotel Restaurant is on the main street in Heudicourt. It is in the hands of a very kind family. Rooms are pleasant either in the main hotel or in the annex 200 mtrs away. There are different catagories. If you want a good sleep take the *** room with 160 cm double bed.
The Restaurant is a ***** star french cuisine a la carte or the choice of a menu. People might think it is expensive, but it is not if you see and taste the quality food and well prepared by the masterchef. His special touches to the food is excellent. All is home made cooked or baked. My favourite dessert is the Mirabelle Glacé.
We go there at least once a year, either the 2 of us or with the gang our friends. We even
celebrated our 12,5 anniversary and our 25th Silver Wedding.
We recommend this place highly for holidays, long weekends, or just going out for an evening dinner.
If you want to go to a bigger town, Verdun is near by. Also St. Mihiel and Montsec de WWI American Monument.
Why do I rate it as 4-star: because of the food and services. The rooms could be a bit bigger. But what would you expect in a cute friendly french village as Heudicourt. What you need is good food, a good bed and bathroom.

We stayed for 2 nights in room 51 of the annex. Quite, motel style rooms in a well laid out design. At 58 euros per night (breakfast is extra & available at the main hotel about 200m. away) it seems to be a bit overpriced. The flock wallpaper had a strange smell, probably damp. Some of the room fittings were in need of maintenance as was the loose & dangerous carpet leading from the shower/basin area.
The provided toiletries were excellent. WiFi (included in the price) worked for one day only.
Upon checkout the staff seemed unaware of the price of the room & tried to charge us 10 euros per night extra.
After a week in an excellent Gite we had to returned to the same property for 2 nights. This is not an area where you can easily get another hotel! We had room 45. This is a slightly larger room but again suffers from lack of basic maintenance. Soap dish held on with one screw, towel rails falling off, wash basin held up by the Grace of God. The shower is over a bath but there is no shower curtain or screen so the tiled floor gets soaked.
The overall cleanliness is fine but the rooms really need a critical look-over by a competent workman; I know it would be a long drive to the nearest B&Q but a couple of hours work would fix all potential criticisms.
WiFi didn't work during our second stay in spite of reporting it to the main hotel.

Room Tip: If you stay here it may be worth paying more to get a room in the main hotel

We stayed at this hotel several years ago and had been asked for a deposit to confirm the booking, although we found this unusual as French hotels do not seem to ask for a deposit ,we paid it giving our credit card number as requested. When checking out they said that they had no knowledge of a deposit having been paid - it was only when we produced our credit card statement (which fortunately we had taken with us!!)showing the deposit amount did they manage to find that the payment had been made. Having enjoyed our stay we accepted this as a simple error and decided to stay at the hotel for an overnight this year. Again a deposit was asked for to confirm the booking.
This time they asked for payment by either credit card or a direct payment into their bank account. In view of our previous experience with them we decided the safer option was to do the direct bank transfer as they had given their bank details. (Bank charge for this £15) When we did the transfer we emailed to say that it had been done and got an acknowledgement saying that they had received this email. On checking out to our surprise they could not find any details of a deposit having been paid !!!!
We produced our receipt of payment from the bank - still the 30 Euro deposit could not be found. Great searching of paperwork was made - no dposit had been received !! We stood our ground even although we had a long journey ahead of us and after about 15 - 20 minutes of checking their bank statements etc it was found.
One lost deposit we can accept as a simple error but twice we suspect to be sharp practice. Even although we enjoyed our meal at this hotel - we certainly will not return.
