“Incredible Chicken Everying”
Reviewed November 24, 2013

A small neighborhood restaurant with a chef who has dedicated his life to chicken. He servers every part of the chicken, he even serves it raw, sashimi style. Don't be afraid, it is some of the best food you will ever have. Very inexpensive for what you get. Great experience.

“Wonderful experience”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Like a lot of people, we found out about Toriki via No Reservations (the TV program with Anthony Bourdain).

It wasn't difficult to get to, but not exactly easy, either. But well worth the trip.

We called to make reservations the day before, and had to ask a few people to find the place once we'd gotten off the train. After a few inquiries, someone finally led us in the right direction (the Japanese are super-wonderful like that), at which point the woman, who was waiting outside, greeted us by name (I guess we were the only foreigners with reservations that night), and led us in.

This place is REALLY tiny; it's hard to see that from the photos. And a couple of people were smoking inside, although it didn't really bother us, as they'd held front-counter seats for us, so we were right by the grill, so the smell of food was the most noticeable thing. This is Japan, after all: like Spain or France, it's just a different culture when it comes to that.

The owner / cook -- in fact the whole staff -- were wonderfully warm, good humored and made us feel very, VERY much at home. The food was excellent, including the chicken sashimi, natto (my first time trying this), and the grilled chicken we ordered (I think it was grilled thigh: they said it was the most popular dish). $50 total for two people, with a beer and two juices.

The place was packed full of what seemed to be regulars, and it really made us long for something like this near where we live in LA (good luck with that). It reminded me a lot of tapas bars in Spain, filled with good, positive, community energy and high spirits.

It's hard to describe the feeling we had visiting this place: the hospitality was so amazing it was as if, just for one night, we were locals.

And afterward we walked the streets around the restaurant. There's a magic little tunnel nearby, with tiny neon-lit streets, and we got a hot sweet potato from a street vendor.

Unforgettable experience, all around. "Come back soon," they said as we were leaving, and we really wish we could.

“Best Chicken Yakitori in Tokyo”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

This place is difficult to find in a working class neighborhood, which maybe the reason for little fan fare, mostly locals come here, which maybe a good thing.Located nearby the Hatanodai station on the Tokyo Ikegami line(very small hidden line).

This is classic Japanese style chicken at its best with a small family restaurant feel.A master chef in chicken preparation, equals to the best master sushi chef in Japan. The whole chicken is carved fresh in front of you before being cooked.

The chicken is prepared in many different styles. It is simple, delicious, fresh and best quality you will find anywhere. The place is warm and inviting and Gaijin friendly. An English a la carte menu is available. Dish prices vary from 500-600 Yen.(I didn't see those previously posted high prices). But, I didn't see or order any chef's special.A wonderful experience by Japan's finest, without the tourist saturation as seen in Tsukiji fish market.I will be back for more.
