Ryokan Sansuiso
Ranked #23 of 41 Hotels / Ryokan in Shinagawa

The worst point about this ryokan is the contact. The ryokan doens't have an email address, and the staff hardly speak any English, which can be a real problem when trying to communicate on the phone. To book a room there, you have to print out a reservation form, fill it out, and fax it to the ryokan, which I did. I got the fax back with a stamp from the ryokan, and a call a few hours later and I was told that my booking was complete. When I arrived in Tokyo, the staff told me that my reservation wasn't complete after all, because apparently I should've sent the fax back again, which, however, the guy on the phone had failed to tell me. As a result, they gave me a room for two nights, rather than the four I'd booked, so I had to search for a new hotel.
Also, the futon was dirty - there were hairs on the sheets, and definitely not mine as I hadn't slept in it when I noticed them, which makes you wonder if they wash them at all.

This is a family-run ryokan, in a old little building not far from Gotanda station.
Location is not bad since it's close to Yamanote line, and there're some restaurant and cafes nearby.

The problem is that the ryokan is quite old and uncomfortable: stairs are thight and it's difficult to bring up luggage (no elevator); we had a room with bathroom but it was really tiny (once the futons were open there's no place to put our feet!); our windows (both of the room and of bathroom) had a view on a brick wall!

Room and bath were quite clean, even if on the sheets I noticed some little red spots that mad me think of bugs inside the futon! I actually saw no bugs around but the overall impression made me feel uncomfortable.

The owner are kind but they don't speak a word in english and this made the communications very difficult.

In a word I would not recommend this hotel: for the same price you can find far better places in Tokyo!

I stayed at this Ryokan with my husband and we found it to be in a great location, close to Gotanda railway station and near a big department store and supermarket .There are lots of cafes and restaurants around and the area is very safe. Gotanda is on a loop line around the city which you can take to visit a lot of the interesting places to see in Tokyo. The Royokan was very clean and tidy. We had a room with a separate bath and toilet. The room itself was bigger than I expected for Tokyo. It was traditional style with mats for sleeping and robes, slippers, green tea and crackers were provided daily. The older couple who run the place were very friendly and helpful and although we didn't speak Japanese we could understand each other up to a point. There is a little noise from the railway and also from construction next door but neither of these bothered us. We found this Ryokan a great base to use for our sightseeing around Tokyo. The room rate was very reasonable for a city like Tokyo.

Stayed for 3 nights in a single room, sharing toilets and shower/bath with other guests. There were 2 shower/bath rooms on the ground floor and I never had to wait to use them. Lock on my door didn't seem to be working too well when I arrived but as soon as I mentioned this one of the staff members was up fixing it and had no more problems. Really pleased with the location, only 5 minutes from Gotanda station which is on the JR Yamanote line so good for rail pass holders.

Me and my girlfriend enjoyed our stay here. It is very close to metro station also lots of resturants around. Room was big and comfortable.
Only problem was construction work near by that caused some noise during daytime- 9:00-18:00... mayby it will be finished when you get there... other wise nighttime is very quite.

I stayed here my first 2 nights in Tokyo. I booked it easily through the Japanese Inn Group:

[--]

I took the Airport Limousine bus to the Shinagawa Prince hotel, crossed the street to the Shinagawa JR station, and then got off 2 stops later at the Gotonda JR station. The Ryokan was a very short walk from there.

Ryokan Sansuiso is an affordable choice (under US$50 per night - 4900 Yen) and the room was large enough. Toilets were western style. I had a lot of privacy. It was a very short walk to the Gotunda JR station and from there you could easily get around Tokyo. This is where I experiened my first Japanese bath and it was relaxing and simply wonderful. Yukata, slippers, tea and biscuits are provided. The futon, mattress and covers were thick and comfortable. There was air conditionning that I hardly used.

This Ryokan doesn't serve an meals but about a 3 minute walk away you can find a range of options, everything from noodle houses, Japanese cuisine at various price ranges and Korean food to Denny's. A variety of vending machines with hot and cold drinks are just steps away. (Leave the Ryokan and turn right...you can't miss them.)

The staff was friendly and helpful and some family members had a basic command of English.

There are stairs so it's not a good choice for people who have physical challenges.

There is some construction going on nearby where the bowling alley used to be but I wasn't even aware of it until after I had checked out and was walking to the station on my way to Kyoto. They clearly don't start very early or work very late into the evening.

This Ryokan is a good choice if you want an affordable alternative, that is clean, bright and conveniently located. You can even see the Japanese version of the Broadway production Cats. It's right around the corner. I have no hesitation in recommending it.
