“Restaurant is hyped up but not great”
Reviewed August 29, 2012

Great service, but the food whilst presented as being somewhat better than average, was in fact not great. The 'Half the Garden' pasta dish sounded like it came with masses of veg, but these were very sparse, and some of those were cooked radishes (bit odd). the chicken breast was nice but rather tasteless, and came with a small quantity of what looked like beans out of a can, and half a potato, no other veg.
Whilst not pricey, this food was disappointing and we are unlikely to venture back.

Clean bathroom and bedroom. However, there was a lack of parking for guests as space was taken by the catering staff on arrival. The lump of concrete that served as a step to the entrance of the room was not helpful for my elderly parents. The hotel reception was cluttered and furniture was piled in front of the hotel desk.on arrival. The receptionist was only interested in our bank card number rather than our comfort. Breakfast was prompt but there was no salt/pepper/sugar in sight. Odd that we had triangular side plates that were too small for the toast.

My parents took me for lunch here, they raved about the beef sandwiches following 2 recent visits. Apparently the sandwiches were not up to previous standards (less beef, crisps not homemade and bread not as delicious) but they were still very good and I thoroughly enjoyed my smoked salmon sandwich.

Bar manager was excellent, very friendly as were the locals and a great place to drop in for lunch with a variety of rooms to sit in. Clearly a very well run family hotel and pub, in a delightful small town. We will be returning.

After reading some of the less than positive reviews of this place I was somewhat cautious about my upcoming weekend away, but I had a genuinely lovely stay.

The room we had in the main building was tidy, clean and relatively spacious, especially when compared to a lot of new chain hotels. Clearly it was a little dated in places, but I think you have to accept not all the furniture being perfect when you are staying in a 2 star hotel.

I loved the location, and loved the building which is an old thatched inn on the quiet high street in Castle Cary next to some galleries and opposite the old town hall.

The staff were all really friendly and I ate in the bar and had a really lovely meal. What this place isn't though is a chain hotel with uniform rooms, standardised service and brand new fittings, I guess you need to understand that and keep it in mind, I loved it but could understand if you are the type of person who wanted homogenous equivalence and guaranteed standards this may not be your place.

But from my part I had a great time and enjoyed the informality and positivity of the staff and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

We were a cricket team and supporters, 22 in total and the hotel met all of our needs. It is a charming old building with a traditional bar and cosy, comfortable lounge areas.
The decor in my room was a modern mix of contemporary and traditional. Beautiful.

The mixed reveiws this hotel has received are simply not justified. If you want 5* service in a hermetic, plastic, modern hotel don't come here. If you want good clean accomodation with friendly, family service in a historic building with locals at the bar, then this is the place to go. We stayed in one of the cottages which are excellent if you have a dog with you. The owner is working his way round improving each room and facility as he can afford. In this climate that is to be welcomed and the room we stayed in was a little tired but is one of the next on the list to be freshened up. Having said that there was nothing wrong with the cleanliness and function and the beds were comfortable. Food was not over fussy but perfectly good local produce well presented.

In short we will be back. Well done.

For the record we paid list price and have received no inducement for this review.

Room Tip: If you have a dog get one of the coutyard cottages. 30 second walk to miles of open countryside.
