We booked this online and the owner Dave contacted us promptly with great instructions on finding the building ( a must for anywhere you visit in Japan- street numbers rarely help!) Dave is British by birth but has lived in Japan for many years- he is now one of just a handful of craftsmen in Japan creating new wood block designs and his work has been exhibited around the world. He is force of nature who makes it so much fun and engages everyone in the group. He's also a tv presenter on English language Asian TV!

You can't choose the design you print- everyone does the same one but once you see the process you will understand why- it is quite labour intensive. If- like me- you know very little about woodblock printing beyond Hokusai's "Great Wave" then this session gives you a true appreciation for the craftsmanship involved and helps to keep alive a sadly dying art.

This is excellent value and I would recommend it to anyone.

The whole experience was so great! we learnt lots about ukiyo-e printmaking, was really informative and fun, the staff are all really friendly and our lack of Japanese was no barrier. Was a little tricky at first but they’re great and patient teachers who made sure we got great results :)

Their collection of artworks for sale is incredible too all such beautiful quality we weren’t planning to but ended up taking one home! 10/10 would recommend and even if you’re not doing a class there go check out their collection :)

After a solid morning of aggressive slight seeing, the wood block printing was a nice break. Friendly and calming instruction guides you through the steps to produce your own souvenir. Groups of 4 are smooth, but larger groups are welcome, just takes a bit longer.
Highly recommended for about a two hour break from the crowds.

If you’ve got an hour to kill in Asakusa, Mokuhankan is a great spot to visit. Dave (the owner) is a craftsman with 30+ years of experience. He’s also good-natured, entertaining, informative and speaks Australian, his native English (with a Canadian accent), and Japanese. The process that goes into printing wood cuts is surprisingly intricate, but achieveable, with the right guidance. Under Dave’s expert tuition, we had a really good time and produced some respectable prints. The course fee included complimentary coffee.
