Only thing good about this place is its price and its staff. Staff members all speak English. But if you speak a few word of Japanese then you don't even need that

Now the bad part. Where do I start. Location wise, it is not too difficult to find, as there are signs all over Asakusa dori, so its not bad, but its a bit of a walk from JR Ueno station, good luck if you have heavy luggage

First, lets talk about the the rooms, rooms are extremely small, but I guess I can't complain because you get what you pay for, but I expected it to be at least clean. The room display obvious signs of use. I woke up in the middle of the night to look up at rusted rotten pipe along the ceiling. My room's window open to the garbage dump.

Due to its price, it attracts a lot of student and younger travelers. The one night I was there, there was some American/European student who keep trying to pick up the girl at the front desk, and there are drunk students all over the place. It get extremely loud and noisy at night, and you can hear every single word if anyone is talking outside your room

I initially planned to stay there for 7 nights, but checked out after my first and moved to Tokyo prince

I will NEVER go back to this place again

My wife and I have stayed at Oak Hotel in Ueno twice now. The second time around we came back simply for the convenience and price.

Our last stay was during the cherry blossom season, and this location was perfect. A 10 minute walk and you are at Ueno Park - a very popular location for cherry blossom viewing. You are also a few minutes walk from the nearest Metro subway and a 10 minute walk from the nearest JR station (Ueno Station, right next to Ueno Park). Ueno Station is on the Yamanote loop line, which is the main train line you'll want to be on to visit places like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Akihabara, etc.

Oak Hotel itself is a no-frills hotel and is more like a hostel. The rooms are small and the bathroom is even smaller, but at least you get you get your own. There is a TV in the room, but it has only Japanese channels which is the norm. It's only the higher-end hotels that actually have satellite TV with english channels. If you plan to hang out in the hotel, this is not the place for you. This is more suited towards those who will be out all day and just need a bed to sleep on at night.
The staff are usually young Japanese who seem to speak at least a little english. We did not really need to interact with them during our stay, aside from check-in and check-out, so I can't comment further than that.

They offer free internet in the lobby, on 4 PCs. The PCs are a bit sluggish and buggy to use, but overall you'll get the job done and at least its free. There are always other foreigners around, so I found the best time to use the net was early in the morning before the others wake up.

There are many shops and restaurants in the neighbourhood. Also, a 10-15min walk in the opposite direction from the station and you are in Asakusa - where there are plenty of markets filled with all sorts of interesting items, including an abundance of traditional Japanese souvenirs and trinkets. This is a popular destination for the locals.

So - given the location, the price is pretty good.

The location is easy to find once you know where it is. You just basically cross the road from JR Ueno Station and keep going straight till you see a small Oak Hotel sign pointing left. If you use Google Earth, you'll be able to locate the hotel and figure it out.

Hope this helps!
