“Enjoyable Japanese Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2006

We stumbled into this great little hotel on our first day in Tokyo.

We stayed in a Japanese-style room, which was very comfortable. The interior decor is really tasteful. The japanese-style bath is nice as well - and there's a great view of the Senso-ji Temple pagoda from the men's side.

The room was more expensive than what we're used to paying in other cities, but it seems to be considered reasonable for Tokyo standards.

The hotel is close to a covered market area and the Senso-ji Temple. It's a nice part of Tokyo that's a bit quieter. There are lots of older buildings in this area that make it very quaint.

  • Liked — It was cute and comfortable.
  • Tips/Secrets — The staff speak English well (which is hard to find!)

Ryokan Shigetsu was one of my favorite places I stayed at in Japan. The staff are kind, the room was clean and well-kept, and I loved the location next to Senso-ji.

I would eagerly recommend it, but there are a few things to note if you're considering staying there.

1. Asakusa is a fairly quiet residential area in the northern part of the city proper. So if sampling Tokyo's nightlife is part of your itinerary you might be better off staying somewhere more central.

2. The size of the rooms at Shigetsu are normal by Tokyo standards, that is to say, small by Western standards. I was perfectly content with the size of my room, which was three tatami--or about 6 x 9 feet. If this sounds cramped to you, stay elsewhere.

3. Make sure to get a Japanese-style room. The Western-style rooms are decent but not at all as nice as the tatami rooms.

4. Don't eat at the hotel. The food's okay, but there are so many options in Asakusa it would be a shame to waste your dining opportunities.

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights the beginning of September. We stayed in a Japanese suite which means you sleep on the floor. We did have a western bathroom which for us was crucial. The room was big by Japanese standards though being 6'4" tall I hit my head a few times. That happened throughout our visit to Japan.

We had breakfast at the hotel each morning. Since we where in Japan we ordered the Japanese breakfast and though more expensive was well worth it.

The staff speaks English pretty well and for the most part is very friendly. I think the fact that they where a bit unsure of their English might have made them a bit apprehensive.

The location of the hotel was excellent. Asakusa is near the Ginza and Asakusa lines which makes getting around Tokyo much easier.

I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone.
