“Excellent choice for first Japan trip”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

Overall experience could not have been better. We traveled in January, so I'm a bit late with this. Location is perfect for a Tokyo central base stay. Train station and Keisei super close. Wife and I knew nothing of Japan - but this hotel made everything come together and work. Staff was super friendly, spoke English, and did everything they could to make us comfortable - they even gave us umbrellas, which we brought home as souvenirs. Here's two tips I don't think i saw on TA when we booked our rooms: 1. With a little searching, you can find turn-by-turn walking directions from Keisei station to the hotel, which is great when you're tired and the street system is so different. 2. Their is a Lawson right around the corner, just in case you want a small pastry instead of fish for breakfast. Definitely going back to Tokyo, and definitely staying here again.

We endorse what other reviewers have said. The location of this hotel couldn't be better as far as access to the train station and therefore other areas of the city. We also enjoyed the local area especially Yanaka Ginza and cemetery - perhaps Akasuka was like this once upon a time before it became a bit too touristy. The hotel staff were very helpful with maps and directions and were also able to forward our luggage on to Takayama so we could travel there via Hakone sans big cases.
I recommend the twin rooms as this hotel which were very comfortable.

Room Tip: Double rooms worth the extra cost if you can afford it.

Location - excellent. Price - very good. Service - excellent. We had no issues booking the hotel (through HostelWorld), communicating with the hotel management (requesting non-smoking room), and staying at the hotel. They let us store our luggage (because we were coming back to this hotel after visiting other cities) and no issue there. The only minor problem we had was our last night (the night we returned from other cities), we were put in the room by the fire escape route on the fifth floor and the bathroom smelled like urine. However, we were only there for one night, so we didn't mention it. Keep in mind, hotels in Japan generally are smaller than what you would expect in Canada. We still had sufficient space to put suitcase and duffel bag.

Room Tip: We enjoyed our room 409, it was quiet.

This hotel is located in an extremely handy location, staffed by friendly, happy people. All emails were promptly answered, nothing was too much trouble.
Very reasonable rates- really pays to get the largest room as the regular rooms were too small. Our room-611- was the end large room and measured around 3x4m with 2 single beds very close together, and a small sitting area (excluding the bathroom).
Although it was in a busy location, our room was really quite and we slept very well. Windows can be opened.
We were very happy with this clean, comfortable hotel, and would recommend it for couples.

Room Tip: Room 611 was great! There were bunks in some of the other rooms we saw, so be advised.

I was in Tokyo for a few days with my kids (18 &21) and they wanted to explore the Ueno area so based on TripAdvisor reviews we chose the Ueno Touganeya Hotel. Great choice! It was just minutes from the Ueno station- take the elevator to the 1st floor, then the walkway on your left (head to the sculpture with the big gold ball) as you leave the station because it has escalators (if you don't want to lug your luggage up/down stairs). Go one street and turn right- the hotel is on your left. It's really nice looking- modern yet somehow traditional at the same time.

I did have to take a cab to the hotel several times and even with GPS the taxi drivers had a little difficulty finding the place- one driver actually pulled over and used his phone mapping system to find it.

We booked 2 rooms easily on online- the only hitch was that the double room didn't have twin beds as requested- just a double bed. The receptionist was quite apologetic and explained that the hotel was full the first night but that we could change rooms the 2nd night. The rooms were both the typical size for a Japanese hotel- similar to something you'd find on a cruise. Enough room for the bed and a teeny desk. Both rooms had hot water kettles and a mini-fridge. They were spotlessly clean and looked newly painted.

The front desk staff all spoke fairly good English and were able to give me directions on where to find an International ATM (7-11 by the way- most ATM's are for Japanese cards only) and how to find several other locations. They had a map of the area (in Japanese) that was quite useful.

There is wifi in the rooms but no English channels on the TV. My kids watched movies on the laptop using the ethernet cable and it worked smoothly. I used the wi-fi to stream on my tablet and it stopped and started occasionally- but worked well enough.

There's a convenience store on the corner. I had a delicious curry steamed dumpling as a snack one day. My kids loved the baked goods. My son also stocked up on the large bowls of ramen to make in his room for a late night snack.

If you head past the hotel and turn right (towards the station) there's a military surplus store that kept my son entertained for ages.

There are many small restaurants in the area and one in the hotel that smelled delicious. But if you're looking for Western food there's a Hard Rock Cafe located inside the Ueno Station. My kids ate dinner there one night and were thrilled to find a limited edition panda with cherry blossoms pin that was released that day.

Ameyoko is about a 5 min walk away, so is the fabulous Ueno Park.

The Keisei electric railroad is about a block further than the Ueno station. For 2400 yen you can take their Narita Syliner (leaves every 30 min or so) that will get you to the airport (with one stop) in about 40 minutes and all the seats are reserved- no standing on a crowded train. You can buy the tickets ahead of time at the station. For about 2000 yen you can take a slower train.

Thank you very much for choosing our hotel and writing such a wonderfully detailed review.
Once again we apologize for the lack of a twin room at the first day.
Our large rooms are very popular for our guests and they are usually booked on early.
We are glad that you enjoyed a steamed dumpling in 24 hours convenient store. Japanese say ,a steamed dumpling is “Nikuman”
Did you see cherry blossoms during your stay in Ueno park, which is near our hotel?
It is a popular place to see 40 kinds and thousands of cherry blossoms.
There are also real pandas in Ueno Zoo.
Thank you again for feedback.
We wish you all the best!

This is my second stay in the hotel and stayed in a double room
Great location and easy access from Keisei line.
Took about an hour from narita terminal 1 to the hotel.

Hotel room size is small but for the price paid is a norm in Tokyo area.
Was woken up by the noisy renovation work in the morning during my stay.

Noticed a problem is that the windows is located above the bed and in the morning, sunlight will shine through and shine on the bed board area although the curtains are drawn.

This disturbed my sleep when I tried to get back to sleep in the early morning.

Food is not a problem with tons of eateries to restaurant around the area.

Probably will try another hotel during my next stay.

We must apologize for your unpleasant time during your stay.
The under construction was supposed to start after check out time but probably there was some mixed up the schedule.
We regret this problem happened during your stay.
Our rooms are located on the north side and the south side of the building therefore sunshine comes in particularly around 11:00 a.m. to noon.
We have taken note of your comments.
We appreciate you taking a time to write a review.
We hope to see you in the future and we will try to offer the best service and the most comfortable facilities as possible.
