“Budget price but more than budget quality”
Reviewed October 14, 2011

one of the most reasonably priced hotels near Ueno Station. not the easiest to find as i was on a small street but the map on their website helped. easier to find if you are standing on the huge pedestrian elevated walkway outside Ueno station, with the unusual sculpture. Look for the Mistsui Garden which is big and the hotel is not far. very welcoming front of staff- Tasuya ( i think his name was). eager to chat and make you welcome. free internet in the lobby and LAN in the room. no wi fi though. room smallish but ok for Japan standards. not much room for luggage which sits on the floor. small japanese plastic toilet/bath- which again is standard, but very clean and functional. nice bed and pillow. great location with access to many of the train lines, department stores, cheap food places, parks. will definitely stay here again if i want to go budget.

The hotel is located in a side street near Ueno station. We got really lost and went to a completely opposite direction because we couldn't figure our way around. So make sure you know how to find it (e.g. Google Earth) before heading there because there's too many exits. The hotel is very reasonably priced and in a wonderful location. We had dinner in Ameyoko several times during the stay and walking distance to Akihabara or Asakusa as well (about 20 minutes walk, not bad at all). We had a double room and it's extremely tiny, as expected. The room is very clean and we sleep like a baby every night. We put out the "no cleaning" sign during our entire stay, but the cleaning lady put a bag of supplies (e.g. new towels, yukata,...) every day in front of our door. Really nice touch!. The front desk staff are really friendly and helpful. I have stayed in several different hotels in Tokyo over the years and I will probably stick with this place in the future. Enough say.

A recommendation from a friend, this was one of our top favourite hotels of all time in Japan! From it's insanely convenient location (just an overhead bridge connection away from Ueno station) to its comfortable rooms and decent rates, I would strongly recommend staying at Touganeya - especially if you are staying for 5 days or longer, as the prices get cheaper with a longer stay.

Just beside the hotel is a Lawson's convenience store which makes satisfying late night hunger pangs on a budget incredibly easy as well! There is even a soba/udon shop that is adjacent to the hotel, which offers meals at great value.

What was the highlight of our stay was the fact that the shopping district of Ueno was a mere 3 minutes walk away. It boasts streets and streets of shopping and roadside joints - you can even find a shop that sells authentic Evisu, True Religion and Armani jeans and apparel at more than 60% off the usual store price!

There is even a shopping mall (catering to the local Japanese) that has an entire floor of Uniqlo, and floors upon floors of footwear, clothing, cosmetics and more - pretty much like a 50% cheaper version of Shibuya 109.

All in all, the hotel was well-equipped and had a comfortable bed - and its gem is in its fantastic location.

Room Tip: Longer stays are cheaper

I had a "large single" room for 3 nights. It was quite small, similar to a London hotel. It had a double bed that was quite comfortable, a small desk, a wardrobe for hanging clothes, but lacked any drawers or shelves for other clothing. The bathroom was compact but clean and utilitarian; it was a prefabricated design like you might see on a cruise ship, but had a good shower/bath with lots of hot water. The air conditioning worked well, and is something you should look for if visiting Tokyo in the summer; the room was 29C when I arrived, but the A/C brought it down to 21C after a few hours. The streets outside are largely pedestrian-only streets, so there is no traffic noise. The surrounding area has lots of little side streets that are full of people at night. The location is good for exploring Tokyo, since Ueno Station has good connections. I paid CAD95 per night including all taxes on Expedia.

There was no room safe (but Japan has little crime). The door had a keycard lock plus a chain on the inside. Watch your head on the doorway. I had free wired Internet on the desk which was surprisingly fast -- I downloaded a file at 7 MB/s, and video played perfectly.

The review by Travelam98 of this hotel on 9 January 2011 contains a number of suggestions that I found really useful. I can amplify on some of his/her suggestions. Take the Keisei Line "Narita Sky Access Skyliner" train from Narita airport; it stops at Nippori station, then Ueno Station where you get out. Ueno Station is really 3 stations: Keisei, JR (Japan Railroad) and Tokyo Metro. The JR station is on the important Yamanote line that loops the city. To find the hotel, look for Metro exit #2. The hotel is exactly 100 paces from the exit (one left-right equals 2 paces). As soon as you reach the sidewalk, turn left and go about 20 paces and turn left to a passageway that has stairs and escalators. Follow the passageway to the first street intersection, turn right and cross the street. The hotel is on your left. I had trouble finding the front doors (sliding glass) because a car is usually parked right in front.

My other suggestion is to buy a Suica card for transportation. I bought a Tokyo Metro pass, but it turns out that there are a number of different companies operating parts of the network. Even in the same subway station, there can be lines operated by different companies. The Suica card contains a transponder that you just press against the turnstile. It is a prepaid card, much like London's Oyster card, so put 2000 Yen on it at least. The turnstile should display the remaining balance. For a visitor it is very liberating to have one card for all forms of transit in Tokyo. You should be able to purchase the Suica card at any station.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel in July 2011. We had Semi-double room. It is small, but I think it is in the same standard with other hotels in Tokyo. The best for this hotel in my opinion is its location especially if you arrive and depart Tokyo by Keisei Skyliner at Keisei Ueno Station and even better if you use JR at Ueno Station or Tokyo Metro at Ueno Station. Very short walk! Direction map in hotel website is clear and informative.

However, one thing that I would like to comment is the lack of ice maker or drinking water machine provided free of charge as many other business hotels in Japan provide this service. It would have been perfect.

There is small kettle for making tea and ‘Yugata’ as your Japanese pyjamas provided in the room. Also there is small refrigerator to use in your room. 2 desktop computer (1 is Apple) with internet are available for use.

Front desk is friendly and helpful. He even carry a large baggage for 1 guest to Keisei Ueno Station!

Make sure you request no smoking room, but you may smell a bit of cigarette smoke from central A/C. There is no free breakfast available, but plenty of Japanese small restaurant e.g. Yoshinoya, noodle shop nearby. It is also close to Ameyoko shopping street and Takeya Building. I would recommend this hotel to everyone concerning quality budget hotel in convenient location.

Room Tip: My room is quiet. The hotel locates in small lane and not many cars passby

We stayed three nights at the hotel and were very pleased with it. The staff were always very helpful. The room had all amenities like tea maker, fridge, tv and bathroom had toileteries. Bed was very comfortable. The location is great as its just short walk to the Ueno Train station where you get trains going everywhere. Also really close to Ueno park. It has a cool and modern look to it as well. Would definitely recommend!

I stayed here for 6 nights last November, and really enjoyed my stay. The staff were very friendly - they spoke reasonable English and were always there to help out. We had a room on the second floor with a double bed - very small, barely any room around the bed. If you are travelling with more than a backpack, you will have trouble finding room for your bags. Travellers with large bags may also find the elevator cramped... For a backpacker couple, this was perfect. The room was very clean with an amply-large bathroom with a good shower. Two computers in the lobby provided free internet access - great for looking things up before sightseeing. TV was all in Japanese, but I wouldn't expect anything else.

The location could not have been better for exploring Tokyo - a few hundred feet from the subway, and a few minutes (via tunnel) to the airport lines. The neighbourhood is very safe and clean - with lots of cheap (for Tokyo) restaurants in the area. It's a quieter area of Tokyo though - with little nightlife. Very good for a morning walk though - especially Ueno park and Yanaka if you keep going.
