“Affordable, cool, and clean ryokan”
Reviewed August 26, 2010

This ryokan is a great option if you are looking for a affordable stay in Tokyo. It is not a ryokan in the traditional sense, but an interesting design ryokan with cool interiors and facade. The ryokan is situated a little in the outskirts of the large hubs, but is still only 2 stops away from Ueno. The closest metro station, Minowa, is 5 minutes away by walk. Buy a 1-day travel card for the Tokyo Metro.

The rooms are clean and functional. The futon was great, I slept very well and the air con worked perfectly. The tatami in the room was also fresh and clean.

All the amenities including shower and toilet worked well. If you are tired after a day in Tokyo, you can soak up in the jacuzzi (free, just make a reservation at the front desk), or rent a DVD (deposition 1000 yen).

Breakfast is a bargain and well cooked. You can sit next to a table or on cushions on the floor, next to some really nice japanese antiquities. There is a vending machine just outside the hotel where you can buy water, soft drinks and beer. Also, there are several restaurants in the neighborhood.

There is no wi fi, but 2 computers for common use at the ground floor.

The people working at the ryokan speaks good English and are extremely helpful! All in all, I can really recommend this place!

I stayed at Andon Ryokan in Tokyo 4 times over the last 6 years and always liked it a lot. It offers good value for money, a well-designed and cozy yet modern atmosphere. Though the rooms are super small it never bothered me. Superfriendly and very helpful stuff with good english knowledge adds to the aready good experience. The only flaw over the years became the location. Its a quiet residential ares north-east of the Ueno area and north of Asakusa, which is in my opinion too far away from some of tokyo's more driving thrilling areas of like Daikanyama, Shibuya, Meguro etc. – This is only my view and it depends very much on what you'll do in Tokyo.

We stayed here for a few nights in May '10 and were very pleased with the experience. From the information on their website and ease of booking, to the friendly and helpful staff, to the really great architecture (read the reviews in the architecture books in reception) the whole stay was very worthwhile. Not to mention the jacuzzi and the breakfast. Although Minowa is not on the convenient Yamanote JR loop, it's easy to get to from Ueno and within walking distance of Kappabashi district.

We stayed here for a few nights in April 2010. It was an excellent experience. It is an ultra-modern ryokan, with a contemporary industrial style of design. The staff were extremely welcoming and helpful, and provide free tea and coffee. Breakfast was delicious (300-500 yen, depending on your breakfast choice). There is a beautiful jacuzzi tub on the top floor that is stunning and you book for private use. Free internet. Almost 500 different DVDs to rent for free, to watch in your own room. A 5-minute walk to the Tokyo subway. Yes, the rooms are pretty small, but the other pros outweigh that one con and you are staying in Tokyo, afterall! I would definitely stay here again if I'm ever back in Tokyo!

This has been our second stay at the Andon Ryokan, and we had an extremely great stay both times. The value for money is excellent as is the cleanliness and the friendly reception that we received. Although not on the yamanote line it is on the Hibiya subway line, the location is nice and close to Ueno and it is a pleasant stroll up to Asakusa.

We loved our stay and will be returning.

Location: It's about 5 minutes walk from the train station, and there are signs indicating the location of the ryokan. There isn't much to do in the area, but it was a quiet and safe area so you can trust on having a good sleep every night.

Service: the receptionist is very nice and gave tips on where to go. There are also delicious breakfast sets, and one can linger in the charming dinning room and enjoy it. There's internet on the first floor, and a common shared bathroom as well.

Room: everything was tastefully done, so you get to stay in a tatami room, ryokan style, but with modern day charm. We stayed on the first floor, and was worried about the noise of people coming in and leaving the place but it wasn't too noisy. One will also get to wear the traditional slippers when walking about the place. The "mattress" (cant remember the term suddenly) was thick and warm, and one could adjust the temperature in the room.

All in all, really not a bad place to stay in :)
