“Wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Lovely Ryokan with immaculate rooms and impeccable service. Everything has been thought of and if you manage to find something you actually need the staff go out of their way to help you find it. Amazing jacuzzi on the top floor is a great bonus! Delicious breakfasts that you can have up on the rooftop terrace. Location is a little further out but well worth the extra few train stations. Thanks for a fabulous stay.

Thank you very much for staying with us and we are happy that we have got this kind message.

We are glad that you enjoyed the Jacuzzi, it’s very good to be relaxed.

And also we are happy that you liked having breakfast on the roof top. When it’s nice weather the roof top is good in the morning. In summer, it will be very hot but you enjoyed it when it’s perfect season.

We placed not in the central but we hope that our guest have an experience to living in a local and old town.

Thank you very much for taking your time for the review.
We hope to see you again in the near future.

We stayed for 7 nights here at Andon, and we loved the experience. It was an easy short walk from Minowa Station on the Hibaya Subway line, which goes straight to Ueno station a major interchange. Also within easy walking distance of Asakusa Senso Ji temple, and a short bus ride from Tokyo Sky Tree and Nippori Fabric Town.
Loved the tasty breakfast (western style eggs and toast, optional bacon, all prepared with perfection) Best morning coffee I found in Tokyo.
Rooms are small, but really only for sleeping in, the style is Japanese - Futon and foldup mat - very comfortable, and free Wifi - great for keeping in touch with home. School Aged child loved the unique Japanese elements and especially the bookable jacuzzi every night.

Thank you very much for your kind review.
We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay.

Yes, it’s about 5 mins walk from Minowa station. Sometimes some guests get lost because the streets around Andon is a little confusing but if you have the map it’s not difficult.

The Jacuzzi is popular with our guest, it’s a good way to be relaxed if someone had a long day. We are very happy that you and your child liked it and also futon etc…

And yes, we serve reasonable breakfast(7AM-10:30AM), full set is 500yen, without reservation, free coffee and tea is available. When we are busy the lounge will be full but recently we got a big table so we got some more seats in the lounge.

We look forward to welcoming you again and your family back to Andon in the near future. Sincere thanks for taking the time to review us.

We arrived late at night past 12:00 am but fortunately Yuko has kindly agreed to wait for us.
Not easy to find at night but what a nice surprise in the morning! The ryokan is very well located only a 5 min walk from the subway station. The staff is wonderful, veru helfull & speak very good English! The breakfast are delicious & you can enjoy a free flow of delicious coffee or tea!
The room are small & you will sleep on the floor - like a ryokan should be! Everything is there available for you! You have access to very clean communal areas for the shower & toilet. You can borrow very comfortable yukutan if you need one to head up to the jacuzzi!!! There is also a possibility to rent some bicycles !!! A most in Tokyo!!! Will go back for sure!

Thank you very much for your comments! We very appreciate it and are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay.
It might be bit hard to find the ryokan at night because we are located in a residential neighborhood. However, it’s actually just 5 min walk from the nearest station. The late check-in is totally no problem! We are always glad to greet our guests anytime.
Thank you also for the comment for our breakfast and coffee. We are happy that you liked it!
We really hope to see you again in the future! Thank you very much. Ryoko

Reviewed April 25, 2013

We first stayed at Andon Ryokan in 2007 for only a night or two. When we were headed back to Tokyo for 3 nights in April 2013 I didn't look anywhere else, straight back to Andon. When we arrived we were greeted with hot tea and warm hospitality. We arrived right as some other guests were finishing their sushi making class and scored some free delicious sushi - bonus! There is a really friendly vibe around Andon, very easy to meet the other guests and get some tips on where to go etc.

The rooms themselves are very small. Once you roll out the futon there's not much room for anything else. That said, the rooms were cleverly designed with shelves and hooks and a small table, so that you could easily store what you needed and tuck your suitcases away until you need to leave, and the futon and pillows were comfortable. There is free wifi to the rooms, which we didn't find in any other hotels/inns during our trip.

There is a lovely shared bath (a traditional touch with a modern style) which you book for your private use either in the morning or evening (no charge), or you can use the shower anytime. For breakfast you just order what you like and they cook it fresh for you. It's around 300-400yen for eggs & toast. 100yen for orange juice and free tea/coffee (anytime! It's good coffee too...). If it's a nice morning they will even serve it for you on the rooftop terrace where you can get a great view across Tokyo.

The staff are always friendly and knowledgeable about things to do, and speak great English. They run a series of workshops such as sushi making, origami, travel Japanese and tea ceremony. We didn't do any this trip, but last trip we took the tea ceremony class and really enjoyed it!

Andon is a little way out of the main hustle and bustle of Tokyo, but not too far. It is within walking distance of Asakusa and the new Skytree area. A tip: in the instructions on how to get there from Minowa station there is reference to an Udon noodle shop. Do yourself a favour and eat there one night. Freshly made udon are delicious!

I've given Andon 4 stars, the only reservation I have is that our room was right next to the shower and toilets and a sink right outside our door. This was very noisy when people would be using them late at night. Generally I found guests were very considerate, but some activities just can't be quieter when they are right outside your room. I had a great time staying at Andon and would highly recommend it!

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the communal bathroom/sink.

Thank you very much for coming back to Andon and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay here again.

As you mentioned we don’t have a big space and sometimes guests mind some noise because the facilities and rooms are very close however many guests care other people.
We always appreciate their kindness and understanding.
Also we changed doors to reduce the noise from outside of the rooms. If there are any improvements we will try to fix the problems.

We will have an event everyday except on Sunday so we would be happy if our guests could have a good experience during staying here. Through the events some guests come to know each other and become friends, it will be much more fun.

Thank you very much again for taking the time to write this very kind review.
We are looking forward to seeing you in the near future.

We (2 adults and 2 children) booked 2 rooms for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The aesthetics of the Ryokan are amazing (considering the prices). The owner explained how she had meticulously supervised all aspects of the build - and it shows. A modern masterpiece of design. The Ryokan is small but not cramped and all staff are friendly and welcoming. Free coffee (Saeco machine) is a plus as are the evening 1 hour Welcome to Japan "lessons" which include language and food. Breakfasts are also cheap and satisfying. Well worth staying an extra couple of stops out of town to enjoy the experience of the Ryokan.

Thank you very much for staying with us and we are glad that you enjoyed your stay.

Drink is free (coffee and tea) for our guests and we hope all guests relaxed here, just like their home. Rooms are really small and most guests will surprised when they saw a room but we are happy when they feel it cozy or something like that way.

We have an event everyday except on Sunday, to know Japanese culture it's good way to try something if you are interested. Some events are free so we hope many guests join us if they have free time.

Thank you for the review and we hope to see you again in the near future.
Thank you very much.

We had a wonderful stay at Andon Ryokan, we were welcomed and the ryokan was clean, comfotrable and friendly. Highly reccomended. The jaccuzi was a great perk in a budget accomodation. Location-wise it was a little out of the city centre, but good metro links to Ueno (which is linked to Narita Airport by train), and the rest of Tokyo so not a problem.

Thank you very much for writing your comment in Trip adviser.I am very happy to reading it.
I love my home town so much. Tokyo has 23 words and my home town of Minowa is in Taito word where has same as Asakusa and Ueno, too. Minowa is local area in Tokyo and it is still keeping old atmosphere fromEdo period. Taito word has 32 public baths. Among them, Andon ryokan area has over 10 public baths.
I think it is really special in Tokyo.

Thank you very much once again for staying with us. We really hope to see you again in the future!

I stayed here with my brother and his friends for 5 days (during my trip in Tokyo) in August 2011.
The building is quite near from Minowa station, about 15 minutes to reach the place.
The building is not big but its comfort.
The room was clean and the share bathroom was clean. The owners was very friendly and extremely helpfull. You can use the internet for free, they provided laptops that you can use it.
You can borrow yukata for free, just ask the staff and they will give you (even help you to wear it)then you can wear it at the event. You can borrow Tokyo guide book from the staff.
We very enjoyed stay here.
I hope someday can back to Japan :)

Thank you very much for your comment! We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay!

Although our rooms are rather small, we always hope our guests enjoy the experience to stay in small cozy Japanese rooms with comfortable tatami mat and futon. That's great you enjoyed wearing yukata during your stay!
We also try to give our guests many useful information to make their stay in Japan wonderful all the time.

Thank you very much once again for staying with us. We really hope to see you again in the future!
