Checked in to this hotel in December 2011 for 2 nights.

Location: Near JR Ueno station. Behind the station, you will find Ueno Park, Ueno Zoo and Tokyo National Museum just to name a few. Located diagonally to the hotel is a hospital and Lawson convenience store is adjacent to the hotel. Nearby, you will find Ameyoko, a market that sells cheap stuffs.

Room: Room is fairly small. I booked a Japanese style room. The room smelled great upon entering. Tatami and Futon were clean and so were the attached toilet and bathroom. Slept soundly as the surrounding were very quiet. Basic amenities were provided.

Service: Room was cleaned daily by friendly and shy cleaning aunties. The counter staff could speak English and they were very helpful. I couldn't comment on breakfast as I woke up after breakfast hour.

Verdict: This room is for those who are just looking for a "no frill, good night sleep". I'd definitely choose this hotel again.

Small hotel within a short walk from the Ueno train station (use the 2nd floor overpass from the station and stay to the right). As many already notede, the rooms are small. I checked a few other hotels in the area and their rooms were about the same size for a similar price. Anyhow the bed wais fairly large but hard as a rock although I slept well. There wsa a small refrigerator in the room as well. I booked this room from a travel place at Narita airport and it worked out okay.
The employees at the front desk were very friendly and someone always knew English. There is a free motorized massage chair in the lobby and wi-fi internet. The sign at the front desk said something about a Japanese breakfast at the restaraunt in the basement (for a price) but I never ate there.

Room Tip: I stayed on the 3rd floor and it was nice and quiet

Ive stayed here multiple times and this hotel fits the bill perfectly for a perfect base in Tokyo. New Izu is a small hotel with personal service by very friendly staff. The rooms have all conveniences ie. TV, hairdryer, kettle, bathrobe, slippers etc and with coin operated washing machine and a convenience store next to the hotel it pretty much covers all your needs.
Ueno has both JR and metro lines allowing you to jump on many lines to get over Tokyo quickly and conveniently. Comfortable hotel in a great location with friendly staff and at a good price.

Room Tip: Single rooms are very small but at a good price considering they have ensuite.

New Izu Hotel has a great location right near the Ueno Station. It has easy access to the trains heading to the different parts of the city, and the Ueno line links directly to the airport and the snowfields which cuts down on transfers. Ueno itself has a great market area, and a wonderful park with a zoo and museums. Despite this, the hotel is on a quiet street. Our first impression of the hotel was that the decor was a little tired-looking, but we soon overlooked that because the service was friendly and our rooms were clean and comfortable. We four adults booked one Western room and one Japanese room so we could take turns trying both. The Japanese room was certainly a commitment to a new experience! The staff here are friendly and helpful. We left some bags at the hotel while we went skiing and they were happy to mind them for us. Even though it is an economical hotel, you can get wifi in the foyer which has comfy couches. There is even a massage chair which is a bit of kitchy fun. We did not try the hotel breakfast, but there is a good coffee shop a few doors away (Pronto) and a convenience store next door.
