We booked here at the last minute Y7,500 for a Twin room. Tired bedroom and bathroom with strong cigarette smells in the room and from the corridor.

Location was quiet but although only 1 stop on the subway from Ueno it felt quite a soulless and bland area.

Like another reviewer we were also harried out of our room by multiple phone calls within the space of a few minutes. There is an early check out time of 10am which we weren't aware of and there were even loudspeaker announcements (in Japanese) to chase out any other stragglers. We were told we would be charged Y500 per hour if we didn't vacate on time. Upon leaving the room the corridors looked like a disaster zone with the 'cleaners' having just emptied the rooms of towels, old razor blades and other detritus onto the corridor carpet.

All in all it was a very hurried and most unpleasant start to the day! I would definitely not recommend staying here!

I stayed here for 6 nights, so am fairly knowledgable about its operation.

PROS:
- Cheapest rate for a single-room w/bathroom near Ueno Station (7 minute walk or 1-subway stop). Price for a single in June 2012: 4400 yen.
- Rooms have their own bathrooms (though they are of course a small modular Japanese one, which a non-Asian may have difficulty fitting into)
- On the quiet side of Ueno. Your ONE thick but tiny window to the outside (may face the wall of the next building) ensures quiet at night
- 24-hour reception and no curfew
- Entrance is 30-second walk to Subway (Inaricho Station), which will take you to Akihabara in just 10 minutes (2 stops)
- Pay lockers available on first floor
- WiFi in rooms, and free (but ancient) Internet PCs in lobby (but no printers)
- 3 minute walk to nearest conbini

CONS:
- Though your room may be advertised as "smoke-free," the hallways of every floor of this hotel are filled with the odor of cigarette smoke. There are no "no smoking" floors, contradicting the hotel's own website description. The smoke issue was also pointed out by
another reviewer.
- Bad ventilation system. On day 2, my always-on bathroom ventilation fan broke down while I slept, causing cigarette smoke from adjacent bathrooms to enter my bathroom and thus my room. The few hours of exposure to this before I woke up was enough to get my sick for a few days (runny nose and coughing), and really disrupted my vacation plans.
- Single rooms are small, about the size of a Western residential bathroom! A single bed literally takes up half the room!
- The 1st-floor eating area also has a perpetual smoky odor. There is a microwave and water dispenser, but no kitchen for guests to use

SUMMARY:
Room is small but quiet. Strategically close to Akihabara. However, the otherwise uneventful stay was ruined right before checkout by the poor attitude of the front desk manager, who was anal-retentive in making sure I was out of the room by the designated chekckout time. This included harassing phone calls minutes apart to the room (while I was packing), and well as visiting the room in person (in a menacing manner). He also threatened me that there would be a late checkout fee (though how he was going to collect this is a mystery, as I had prepaid for the entire stay with cash on Day 1). This incredibly shortsighted and rude treatment of a long-term customer (who even pointed out the broken bathroom fan for repair) destroyed any affinity I had for this lodging, and forces me to reduce my rating to what it is. Spend the extra 500 yen to find identical quality lodging elsewhere, where you will avoid such gross failure of customer service.

Room Tip: Always keep the bathroom fan on, since if it is turned off, smoke/odor from adjacent rooms will natu...

I have stayed 8 days at this hotel. Very affordable prices for s single room, smoking allowed and very good location near Ueno railway and subway station. According to their website just an 8 minute walk from Ueno but that is nearly impossible. With luggage a 20 minute walk is more accurate. The room is a bit old but for that money, complete with private bathroom, TV, free WIFI and aircon, the subway, Mc Donald, a coffee shop and convenient store all within 100 meter is just great.
