“Classic Japanese Shopping Street”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

This was our first visit to a Japanese shopping district. Located on both sides of the elevated JR line, it was easy to find. Anything you thought you wanted to eat (or not) can be easily found. This is not a covered shopping area, so have an umbrella handy if it rains.

“Zoo, street market, sakura,....”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

I really enjoy this zoo, you can spend half a day without even noticing, If you can visit it byt the Sakura season or in any festival season, it would be the best! Many foods tents, and the sakuras are beautiful !! It gets really crowded, so try to reach it by train. The car jam/traffic is scary Oo!!

Spend an afternoon in Ueno. Stroll through the park. Visit the beautiful temples and shrines, enjoy different views of the amazing pagoda. If you like the Zoo, there the panda bears are the undisputed stars. By the way, the cleanest great Zoo I've ever seen. How do they manage to have the polar bear water so clean? Afterwards, when the sun comes down, take a walk through the neighboring commercial streets and galleries. Shops are popular, no big brands here. Wonderful!

“For a genuine Japanese experience”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

I am often in Japan for business and despite Ueno not getting the fanfare of other main Tokyo cities such as Shinjuku and Shibuya, I think Ueno is the best place for seeing unpresumptuous Japan. There is a beautiful park which has bonsai prize shows, flowering lotuses and hanami picnics depending on the season, as well as year round buskers, a seedy sex trade and homeless people meticulously tending to their tents and the local stray cats. Ameyoko, the busy market strip, has husky voiced men selling seafood under the rumble of trains passing overhead. Ueno has a real mix of ordinary Japan people without any pretense of wealth or luxury. I love it for the atmosphere and authenticity- granted though, it may not be ideal for those wanting to see modernity and fancy merchandise. It is also close by to Asakasa and Kappabashi so I recommend getting lost in the area and seeing the side streets for some interesting travel experiences.
