“Great experience for whole family”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

15 minute walk from Uguisudani JR Station through mixed residential, small restaurants and little stores. Gives you a look into the real living of locals. Located on a quite street. We stayed 3 nights with our 5 and 8 year old and had no problem walking to this place even after walking around all day.

The place is spotless clean and I am a neat freak.

Staff is very nice and helpful.

Tea ceremony every morning is free and a wonderful opportunity to learn the history. After the cook is done with breakfast she performs the tea ceremony allowing lots of picture opportunities and running through it a few times with specifics. Even my kids enjoyed it and remember how to do it now.

Breakfast is simple but good, filling, and good priced. We tried all three available breakfasts and all are good.

We used the washer and drier and is 500, i was able to do a huge load. Was perfect to run a load while eating breakfast.

The bath is 500 and is fine. Just very hot water in a large tub for two with a shower to use afterwards.

We got the Japanese style room and it was perfect for our family with the two cots (twin size). We all crammed on them and worked fine. It was comfortable for both us adults and one is back sleeper and one stomach sleeper. There is enough room to put out luggage and sit. The fridge was a nice extra. Bathroom is just big enough, water temp and pressure great. Place was spotless clean.

Close by are plenty of little stores and supermarkets to stock up on fresh or pre packed foods. In the evening we enjoyed soft serve ice cream from Mini Stop and it was very good and less that 200, also alcohol beverages there. Edo Sakura gives you a map of places close by. The Ramen place was good and the cook spoke English to help us order.

I stayed at Edo Sakura 3 nights with my family (from 19th to 22nd September). The hotel is a 2 minutes walking from the subway. the hotel is not located in a touristic location and we had always to use the subway to get anywhere. I found this a little bit upsetting as I was traveling with my 5 year old son. If you really want to be in the city center, the best would be Ginza but the prices of the hotels there are much more expensive.

The hotel is extremely clean and rooms have a good size for Tokyo. It is very beautiful, it is a zen style. The hotel does not have lobby or any service after 10am. In the afternoon I asked for a coffee and the staff told me they did not have anything.

The breakfast is nothing special but as it is located in a residential part of the city we decided to have breakfast there due to the lack of options.

We liked to stay there although I missed some of the amenities of the big hotels.

The location was excellent, close to Uguisudani station, just a few stops to Tokyo Central Station, which meant we could get around easily. The private bathroom and English-speaking staff were welcome to us, as this was where we stayed for the first few days of our first trip to Japan. But we also felt like we were getting a taste of "authentic" Japanese travel, staying in a traditional room, booking time in the baths, and enjoying the Japanese breakfasts. Definitely recommended, especially for first-time tourists to Japan.

This is very new and cozy hotel and it offers traditional and modern beds. We booked a traditional room and it was a great experience. You get a lot for what you pay and the staff is also very helpful and fluent in English. Location is good, Ueno station is 10 minutes walking from the hotel and there is a metro station closer, but we didn't use it.

I cannot say enough good things about The Edo Sakura...I loved my experience, my room (traditional Japanese style), the inn was immaculately clean and extremely quiet.
This should not however be classified as a 'Bed & Breakfast' because breakfast was NOT included, it was an additional charge.
Better directions or perhaps even a shuttle service to and from the local subway and/or train station would have been great. Most locals only speak Japanese, therefore communication to locate the inn was challenging to say t he least...
The entire staff were grand, Yoko and Koyo were excellent, went over and beyond the call of duty and spoke very good English-which was a definite advantage. I loved Yoko's energy, enthusiasm assistance and explanation of local customs and traditions.
Would I go back to Japan; possibly ? I would most certainly stay again at The Edo Sakura.

A lovely new Japanese style boutique hotel situated in Shitaya. Easy to locate when coming from Iriya station.

Location: A short 3-4 min walk to Iriya station on the Hibiya line. To get to JR Uguisudani station takes about 11 min once you've figured out the best route. Getting to most tourist locations requires a change of train. A few restaurants nearby. However, for more choice, make your way to Ueno. Several small supermarkets nearby.

Hotel: Built in traditional style which is maintained throughout the establishment and not just the exterior and rooms. I love the design. See the official website: what you see there is what you get. It's also new and spanking clean.

Staff: Friendly and polite. The younger staff managing the counter all speak English.

Rooms: We stayed in a 6 mat type A (18 sq m) Japanese style room. The room was typical Japanese style: simply yet nicely decorated. Safe, fridge, TV, kettle and tea are provided. Nice size toilet by Japanese standards. Toiletries and hairdryer provided. Very, very quiet at all times of the day.
Bedding was fine but the pillow was a bit too firm for my liking. Free wifi worked well throughout our 6 day stay and for multiple devices.

Meals: Breakfast is between 500-800 yen. The Japanese breakfast at 800 yen is reasonable value, tasty and quite substantial.

Laundry: Washer and dryer are available for 500 yen per use.

Misc: Didn't try to public bath as we stayed during a hot spell. During our stay, the majority of the guests were Caucasians although we did see a few Asians guests.

Recommend: I highly recommend this for anyone who would like to stay in a Japanese style accommodation rather than a generic hotel. Also for a quiet place, free from the smell of cigarette smoke.

Don't recommend: If you want to stay near a major subway station and restaurants.

I will definitely stay there again when I travel for leisure / pleasure.

This was our first visit to Tokyo. We had a wonderful stay at the Edo Sakura Ryokan. The place is very clean and very quiet. We stayed in a Japanese style room which was a great experience, we slept really well on our futons on the floor! The staff were very helpful. We had the full Japanese breakfast which was delicious. It may seem a little out of town, but realistically wherever you stay in Tokyo you have to go on the subway so it wasn't an issue. The Irya station is a 5 minute walk and this line is very convenient and takes you amongst other things directly to the fish market. Ueno is nearby with many places to eat, street stalls and vibrant at night with the Ameyoko markets. Definitely recommend this Ryokan
