This was my second time when I stay at Annex Katsutaro Ryokan (first was September 2011) and both times I was very happy with my stay. And if I will be in Tokyo again, I will choose Annex Katsutaro for sure.
I like the district and the neighborhood, maybe it is not in the "center" of Tokyo, but it have convenient connection with whole city. The area is quiet.
Rooms are very comfortable and clean (the rooms are cleaned every day and everyday there is clean towel). Futons are very comfortable.
The service is very friendly and helpful.

Quiet nights sleep on a futon on a tatami floor. Bathrooms with shower or bath, toilet of course. Clean room and plenty of room for two. Modern exterior, but rooms have all the positives of a new japanese style room-solid construction and no room noise from neighbors! Another huge plus is the free WiFi in the room. Wonderful neighborhood filled with small shops and great inexpensive food. Located close to Nippori train station that you will use all the time to get anywhere in Tokyo-also directly to Narita airport. Office staff speak english and provide lots of maps and info. There is nothing bad I can say about Annex Katsutaro!!
If you're looking for neon, street noise, and crowds-Don't stay here...

Room Tip: Older, wood building with lot of character, also mean creaky floors, thin walls between rooms, and m...

This is a very good ryokan style hotel. You sleep on futons, that are actually very comfortable and you sit on tatami mats around the low table. It's nice and it's clean. We had three futons for 2 adults and a 4-year old and we had planty of space (we could have done with 2 futons). There was also space to squeeze in a baby cot in the corner of the room. There is a fridge, water kettle, ipod/iphone docking station and a tv (which we didn't try so it might just have Japanese channels).

Tokyo is expensive, so this is not a cheap hotel, if you compare what you can get in other countries ini Asia, but for Tokyo it's good value for money.

The location is very convenient just next to the metro and a JR train station (if you have the JR rail pass) and there is a bus stop just outside the door. The personnel is very sweet and extremely helpful. There are washing machines in the lobby of you should need it. And there are umbrellas that you can borrow if it starts raining.

The hotel is located in a more quiet residential part of Tokyo, next to a small street (Yanaka, which is actually mentioned in Lonely Planet) bustling with shops, souvenirs, food, etc during daytime. But don't try to go here for dinner, you'll be very disappointed. But there is no problem to get around in Tokyo.

It's also very close to a drugstore selling a good selection of baby food, diapers and baby items (if you happen to travel with a baby). They also sell some food. There are 2 convenience stores open 24h just around the corner and a bakery where you can buy very good bread baked in an oven made of stones from Mt Fuji (unfortunately they don't open very early).

Oh, and if you like their yukata style dressing gown you can buy one at the front desk. They are made of very good thick cotton and are of better quality than most reasonably priced yukatas you can buy. They are used though, but there is nothing wrong with some recycling.

My friend and I only stayed one night, but we had a great experience here. Whilst Annex Katsutaro is a rather more contemporary Ryokan, it absolutely maintains the integrity of a traditional Japanese guest house. The rooms are clean and simple - Tatami matted floors together with comfortable futon beds and of course kimonos to relax in. The local area of Ueno is a wonderful little pocket of Tokyo... stepping outside the Ryokan the charming narrow streets are filled with local traders and rich with a plethora of restaurants serving wonderful local cuisine. I experienced the finest Ramen soup I have ever had in a quaint and modest restaurant just 2 minutes walk from the Ryokan.
Mieko and her husband who run the Ryokan were kind, helpful and welcoming. It is also an excellent location if you are either arriving or departing from Narita airport, as the airport express train goes directly from Nippori Station just 5 minutes away.
Excellent stay and great value for money... highly recommended!

Clean, comfortable and extremely budget friendly. Good area with minimal street noise. Short walk to both train and subway. All staff were exceptionally friendly and spoke perfect English. Unless you prefer to break the bank on luxury, there really is no reason not to stay here.

I chose this ryokan based on the good reviews from TripAdvisor. Locationwise, it is between Nippori station (JR line) and Sendagi station (Chiyoda line). Walk to Nippori station will take about 15 minutes and Sendagi station is within 5 minutes.

There is a convenience store, Lawson Station, within 3 minutes walk. I was given a single room with all the facilities I need. Bathroom is clean. Yukata and towel are changed daily. The area is quiet at night and perfectly safe.

For the price I paid, it is definitely worth a stay.
