Owner description: According to legend, two brothers kept trying to return a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, to the Sumida River only to have it returned to them the next day. This temple located in Tokyo's Asakusa district was built to honor her.

The building is impressive and the history behind it is also special, but holy crap it is busy! Any time of day, any particular day, it will be busy. Hawkers selling the same kind of souvenirs everywhere, smell of moon cakes, it's an interesting place. Don't allocate a big chunk of time there, you'll only need an hour.

I just love this temple. Been visiting since I was a little girl, I don't know, there' s this joyous atmosphere there, with it's own aisle lined with little shops selling weird Japanese-ish souvenirs and snacks that are fun to eat leading up to the temple. Sadly, this temple has become a major tourist attraction, so now adays, it's always terribly crowded. You have a tight schedule, the crowd can become very annoying.

We were so lucky to have been in Tokyo while the cherry blossoms were in bloom, and it made Sensoji Temple even more outstanding. Although the buildings were beautiful, the garden areas and how they have incorporated sculptures into the garden was fantastic. Plan extra time so you can visit some of the many shops in the area.

I walked down the shopping street that leads up to the temple in the early evening and it was definitely beautiful. The temple and pagoda were all lit up and the crowds had pretty much left because the temple itself was closed. It is a great place to start as you begin your time in the Asakusa area.

Very nice view, very nice temple.
There is a market in front of the temple that sells very interesting souvenirs.
