Owner description: According to legend, two brothers kept trying to return a statue of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, to the Sumida River only to have it returned to them the next day. This temple located in Tokyo's Asakusa district was built to honor her.

The shrines are captivating. Lots of locals also visiting to pray etc which was awesome to watch e.g. lighting incense and watching different people go through their rituals, washing your hands at the 'dragonman' fountain, putting a coin in the wishing well etc. Good to capture the essence of Buddhism.

Good photo opportunities.

There is an orange tree growing by one of the shrines which was just full of big and bright oranges... perhaps the healthiest orange tree I have ever seen!

The main pedestrian only street leading to the main shrine has many snack and souvenir shops, but there are also cross streets with just as many things to see. One particular street had beautiful japanese lanterns ans street speakers playing some japanese string instrument which was so relaxing as you walk the street.

“Nice temple. Busy with people.”
Reviewed March 5, 2014 via mobile

Nice place for a stroll, snack & just watch people. Lots of shops sell Japanese crackers fresh here, so maybe it's the best place to get them, but be aware of the tourist trap shops. This is not the place to bargain.

“Sensoji Temple”
Reviewed March 2, 2014

Wonderful place to visit and experience. Although it is very commercialized at the beginning with shops lining the way to the temple itself, still a nice experience. Plus one can get all the souvenirs one needs in just this one place. From candy to food, to clothes, to trinkets, to swords and just about anything else you can think of. There are shops with food to eat as well. Plus regular shops in very close proximity. The Thunder Gate entrance is amazing but very crowed due to everyone wanting a picture. Temple is very impressive and lots of people taking it in. Grounds are nice with lots to see and capture on pics. Pagoda is impressive to. Recommended.

“Beautiful temple beside shopping area”
Reviewed February 27, 2014

The temple was very nice and picturesque, and had a solemn atmosphere to it despite being regularly visited by throngs of people. Before reaching the temple, you will pass by a long street filled with stalls selling different items, from Japanese wares to Japanese food and souvenirs. We went there on a Saturday and it was crowded, but we had a great time
