The Sawanoya is a bit off the beaten path, but in a cool, quiet neighborhood near Ueno Park. The staff are really friendly. My friend and I stayed in one of the tatami rooms, and it was small but very pleasant. The two private onsens were my favorite thing about this hotel - so nice to sit and soak after a day of sightseeing!

the Ryokan is lovely, the staff are very friendly and place is very clean. the beds are mats, they are surprisingly comfortable.
The Ryokan is located in close proximity to Nezu Subway. it takes about 5-7mins to walk to the subway from the Ryokan. The Ryokan also has a hot bath, this is very clean and relaxing to spend time in after walking around Tokyo all day in the cold. The area of of Nazu is lovely, there are plenty of little lane ways to stroll down and discover great local eateries. We stumbled across Sumire (2-24-8 Nezu, Bunkyo-ku), it about a 1-2 min walk from the Ryokan. It is a local eatery with only 10 seats. The owner Yakko-san is Japanese however studied in the US so her english is excellent. We asked her to recommend food and she brought out a mix of tasty local dishes. The locals were very welcoming and they bought us sake all night! highly recommend you stop by Sumire for dinner.

This was one of the greatest hospitality experiences I've ever had. It was simply exceptional. The staff was incredibly helpful, kind, and welcoming. The rooms were cozy and clean. There isn't much more I can say. It was the perfect home base for exploring Tokyo on a budget. The ryokan may not be centrally located, but it's a 10-12 minute walk from the nearest metro stop, and the metro will take you anywhere you want to be. I don't know if this place can be beat, in terms of value and hospitality. Highly recommend.

I stayed for three nights in the Sawanoya. The first night I stayed by myself in a small room on the 3rd floor and the other two nights, I stayed with a friend in a larger room on the 2nd floor. I was apprehensive about the shared toilet situation at first but it wasn't a problem at all. I loved the modern Japanese toilet experience. The futons were comfy and the blankets provided were warm and luxurious and I liked the fluffy duvets.

I also loved the beautiful, elegant, and simple layout of the rooms with their tatami mats and beautifully understated decoration. There is plenty of guidance in the form of English language signs and manuals to take away any fear you might have of using the Onsen (japanese shared bath), wearing the robe they provide, understanding etiquette, and learning about the country.

The family is super sweet and nice and helpful in looking up information for you, organizing sightseeing, and travel arrangements. They also are looking out for budget travelers as Japan is super expensive!

My favorite thing about the Sawanoya was the shared "onsen" or hot baths. I was there in the winter and the experience of sinking into the hot tub, sliding open the window to gaze at the little garden, and relaxing was not to be missed. I took 2 a day!

I did not find the hotel crowded or rushed and just loved it there. I will be back!

Overall an enjoyable stay.

Cons:
1. The lady who checked us in was brisk and not friendly to us. This could be because we cancelled the last night of our booking on the day we checked in. So that was our fault I guess. It could also be because my 2.5 year old toddler grabbed everything that he saw on the table and created a mess.

2. The ryokan is a little distance away from the nearest metro station (Yezu). About 10 mins walk, this is the speed of a family of a 5 months pregnant lady pushing 2.5 year old toddler on pram.

Pros:
1. Rooms are very clean! There is no TV in te room which made the rooms quiet and peaceful.

2. The hot bath looks traditional with wooden floor and stone bath. It's shared bathroom but maintained very clean and we could lock up the bath to use privately each time. We didn't have to take a bath with other people and families can go in together. There are only two bathrooms in the whole ryokan but we didn't have any problem slotting in to have a good hot bath at decent timing. Our son had a great time playing in the bathroom with all the buckets lying around. Liquid soap and shampoo are provided too, which was a bonus for us.

3. Other than the lady who checked us in, the old grandpa and others are friendly and accommodating.

4. They have a coin operated washing machine and drier but we could also line dry our clothes on their roof terrace too.

5. The room that we were in had a basin which was nice cos we could brush our teeth in private.

6. Toilets are communal too but very clean and nicely decorated.

Overall it was a pleasant stay. Costs wise it's probably on the higher side but for the cleanliness and quiet environment, it was worth it.

Once we found sawanoya we really enjoyed the location, and the Japanese-style hospitality. The onsen was superb after a day wandering around Tokyo and we found some great restaurants and interesting places to eat nearby- highly recommended.Staff very hospitable and knowledgeable.

My extended family and I stayed at Ryokan Sawanoya for 5 nights mid-Jan 2013. This is a great value, clean and comfortable ryokan with extremely helpful English speaking Japanese hosts. There is a huge variety of local and regional information available in the common dining area on the ground floor - from local historic and cultural walks to information on the numerous Niigata and Nagano ski resorts. The ryokan is about a 20 minute walk from the main Ueno station complex, 15 mins from the Tokyo Zoo, and about the same to an incredible variety of museums, temples, shrines and parks. The closest subway station is only about 5 - 10 minutes walk away.
The Taito district provides great glimpses into life in old Tokyo during the Edo period. It is predominantly low-rise and has the feel of one of NYC's smaller neighbourhoods - small bars and restaurants catering to mainly local clientele, narrow but safe streets with little car traffic, and fascinating small artisan shops selling hand made goods (paper, prints, hand-made twice washed canvas bags and apparel, pottery, beautiful hand made wooden boxes etc). It feels quiet and mercifully free of the often overwhelming retail and commercial presence felt in many of the other popular tourist districts in Tokyo.
The guest rooms are tastefully decorated, small (but not by Japanese standards) and comfortable, breakfasts are moderately priced, the whole place is immaculately clean and well kept, and the shared bathrooms with ofuro are simply stunning places to soak and consider your good fortune.
We will definitely be back the next time we are in town.
