Thumbs up on Asakusa Shrine. Massive shrine in a very "Japanese" neighborhood. Can be very crowded on holidays, but what you would expect in Tokyo. Well worth a visit.

The Asakusa shrine and surrounding area is a great area for tourists to get a flavour of japan and great shopping for souvenirs and if you want one a Yakuta. There are plenty of restaurants and eateries from traditional through to Macdonald's.

The shrine itself is great to visit on a bank holiday just for the crowds and there was a monkey show on, which may challenge western sensibilities on animal welfare but all the locals were having a ball so I enjoyed it as well.

But if you want to shop and generally prefer less hectic go on normal weekdays if you can, it is just less crowded and easier to get photos of the places such as the large paper lantern at the entrance.

Easy to get to from both the Ginza and Asakusa underground lines and access A4 at the top turn right and walk towards the main roads.

The shrine is next to Sensoji temple. It's small as compared to the temple and I wonder how many people mistook it as being part of the temple. There's nothing much to see here but they hold a class next to the shrine. I don;t have any idea what class it was though.

I love taking visitors here for a taste of "typical" Japan. Lots of great shops for souvenirs, very tourist friendly and always a winner with visitors to Tokyo. I love to get the fortune slip when I visit the shrine; drop 100 yen in the slot, shake the little box provided and pull out a stick with a number on it, find the corresponding drawer and take out your fortune slip! This is one of my favourite things and my guests always seem to really enjoy laughing over their "excellent" or "bad" fortune.

All the authenticity of the temples, shrines, architecture, symbolism, etc. About an hours train ride (because of all the stops) on the Ginza line from Shibuya right to the front entrance of the Shrine. There's lot of shops that lead up to the gate. Plenty of pilgrims working their way forward, fanning smoke on themselves from one of the fire pits (for lack of the proper word) and then going up the steps to the Shrine. Drop your coins and raise your prayers. (yep). Lots to see in this neighborhood. Venture down some side streets and you'll find lots of little restaurants filled with locals. It's a good time and felt reasonably safe and welcome by the locals.
