“A favourite for visitors”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

I love taking visitors here for a taste of "typical" Japan. Lots of great shops for souvenirs, very tourist friendly and always a winner with visitors to Tokyo. I love to get the fortune slip when I visit the shrine; drop 100 yen in the slot, shake the little box provided and pull out a stick with a number on it, find the corresponding drawer and take out your fortune slip! This is one of my favourite things and my guests always seem to really enjoy laughing over their "excellent" or "bad" fortune.

“True Japan”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

All the authenticity of the temples, shrines, architecture, symbolism, etc. About an hours train ride (because of all the stops) on the Ginza line from Shibuya right to the front entrance of the Shrine. There's lot of shops that lead up to the gate. Plenty of pilgrims working their way forward, fanning smoke on themselves from one of the fire pits (for lack of the proper word) and then going up the steps to the Shrine. Drop your coins and raise your prayers. (yep). Lots to see in this neighborhood. Venture down some side streets and you'll find lots of little restaurants filled with locals. It's a good time and felt reasonably safe and welcome by the locals.

“Pretty much shop shop till you drop”
Reviewed December 22, 2013

Huge shopping district using the temple as a disguise. All the souvenirs are cheap but do bring a lot $$$ if you have buyer's impulse. The staff in most shops are more fluent in English than most Japanese around Taito.

Most importantly, visit the shrine. There are lots of cool stuff there and you can even buy charms for your loved ones. Beware of the excessive smoke though. Ain't no body got time for bronchitis.

“Large Buddhist Shrine with Market”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

It is just another Buddhist temple, large and impressive. People believe that incentive smoke is magical and can bring you heath and beauty. For 100 Yen you can get you good or bad fortune, but be sure to have somebody to translate the number for you (it all in Japanese). Huge mall with all kind of food and trinkets is behind the srine.

“Beautiful red temple”
Reviewed November 30, 2013 via mobile

This was a beautiful and large temple complex which is painted bright red. It is visually stunning. I especially appreciated the giant red lanterns hanging in the temple. It is just around the corner from the metro so very easy to access. The downside is that it is very busy and packed with tourists, so streets around it are a bit of a trap
