Mixed Review

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 20, 2012
We stayed as a couple in this hotel for 7 days and have mixed feelings, hopefully this review will help future travelers.

The best things about it: location wise is excellent. It's right next door to one of Ueno's station entrances. It has a supermarket right across the street and surrounded by coffee shops and restaurants. The hotel is amazingly clean and the AC and other amenities are brilliant. The most convenient feature is that they give u free wifi routers which are very reliable and it was a joy and very useful to have high speed Internet around the clock.

The negative: The rooms are tiny. As in barely fit for two people to be in the room at the same time. You have to be creative as to where you would be able to place two average luggage pieces. The front desk staff and everyone are extremely polite but they do not know ANY English. This makes it hard to ask directions or advice for anything, just don't bother. Not much seating space in lobby other than one couch so can't wait for anyone.

Overall, if you don't suppose you will mind the negative, go for it. We got used to everything by our second day and then we were really ready to enjoy Tokyo.

This hotel is well situated near Ueno JR and metro stations and also close to the Skyliner train from Narita. It's a comfortable and well maintained hotel with most features one expects nowadays, including internet availability in the room. There are also washing/drying facilities at a reasonable price, and drink vending and ice machines on each floor. Reception staff were pleasant and helpful when asked and met all our needs. The rooms we were offered were on the small side, with limited shelf space for clothes and toiletries, but overall just adequate. Our only other experience of a modern Tokyo hotel was the Hotel Century Southern Tower in lively Shinjuku which was quite spacious by comparison to this hotel, cheaper, and only one subway station from the Skyliner line from Narita.

Room tip: Our original room was only 18m2; after viewing it we paid a further ¥1250 a night for a 20m2 room that was adequate but still far from spacious. If space is important to you we suggest you ask to see your room before you pay.

What's good:
It's right next to Ueno JR station. In less than 10 minutes, with a straightforward walk through some easily navigated subways you can be on the new Keisei Skyliner express train that take as little as 40 minutes to Narita.
The room was small but well equipped and comfortable and you can hardly hear outside. Only one pillow per bed plus a little cushion.
What's not:
That convenience is very expensive. The breakfast is atrocious. It starts at 7, and a line forms for that early, then it's a narrow line past a poor collection of budget-hotel style offerings and a bit of pasta. The tables are so close that you can hardly get in.
Service. I asked if they could print my boarding pass pdf. They smilingly directed me to a print shop over the road!!! My wife asked for help with the bags. They wanted to charge her.

We stayed at the Mitsui Garden over Mother's Day weekend. We had three rooms. The rooms are small compared to U.S. standards but standard compared to other Japanese hotels. Rooms were clean and service was excellent. Some staff spoke English. Hotel very convienent (Exit 1 on the Ginza line). There is also a Tokyo tourism office at the Ueno office. Yes - it will be nice for WiFi throughout the hotel. We got one of the WiFi "packages" but was not able to access from our rooms. Restaurants near the hotel were small that served mostly noodles. Enjoyed the easy access to/from the Tokyo Metro line.

Stayed here for 2 nights. It is very near from JR ueno station. About 5min walking distance from the station. You may see homeless at the station during nights. It is a walking distance to Ameyoko and Ueno park which we enjoyed. Ameyoko is always crowded but has tons of restaurants. We went to Ueno park during the weekends, therefore there were performances and dogs. Starbucks opened recently and the design is nice and open. We couldn't go in as it was crowded. Generally, Starbucks in Japan is often crowded. The hotel was not too small but sufficient. We reserved through online therefore the price was cheaper. They provide amenities for ladies which was great. There's a flat iron/waffle pajamas/magnifying mirror and face steamer. I pampered myself and felt so refreshed. Can be noisy at night with traffics but highly recommend. There's a metro just next to the hotel.

Staff were courteous and attentive. Room was spacious (for Tokyo!) and comfortable. Excellent location, just a stones throw from Ueno station. Would definitely stay here again. Only suggestion in for WiFi to be available in all areas of the hotel, not just the lobby
