Easy to find if you catch the Yamanote Line to Nippori, and walk towards the hill, away from the city buildings. A peaceful stroll and well maintained shrines. If you like to jump off and on the Yamanote Line and see the sites near to stations then Yanaka Cemetery fits this bill. Not essential but a pleasant option.

This place is a must when you are in Tokyo. There are great little temples and it is not very busy (comparatively to Sensoji Temple for example). The best temple by far is the Tennoji Temple. Originally constructed in 1274, this temple is one of the last remaining refuges for the Tendai sect of Buddhism. Visiting this Temple is a truly relaxing and uplifting experience. While most people might find a trip to a cemetery to be unconventional, do take a walk over the cemetery it is worthwhile.

This is a surprisingly quiet place, close to the Nippori station. There are many big tombstones and small shrines in the area. The place looks beautiful in the spring with cherry blossoms. You can walk from Nippori towards Ueno station and the National Museum.

If you've done all the iconic tourist attractions in Tokyo, the Yanaka cemetery is worth a visit, just to see something different. It's very close to Nippori subway station (take the south west exit and follow the road left to get onto the main road of the cemetery). It is worth extending your trip to the cemetery by exploring some of the nearby streets which are full of temples and shrines. Google "Yanaka walking tours" to see several options. It's easy to get lost, but the area is charming, so getting lost isn't so bad!

Its very easy to get overwhelmed by the great museums, temples and gardens in Tokyo so for a nice change of pace I would suggest Yanaka, the oldest cemetery in the city. Take the subway to Nippori Station and enter from the north side and work your way south so that when you end you are close to Ueno park. The cemetery has numerous information displays to keep you oriented, a mini police station for security and several restrooms. There is even a playground for children!

The cemetery itself is quite striking as modern tomb markers mix with more traditional headstones. The different styles are quite interesting and there are some shrines along the way. And it is peaceful without being oppressive or too somber. I would give this 90 minutes.
