“Cozy place with the basics for a good night sleep”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

Rooms are small but cozy and are just what you need for a good night sleep here in Tokyo. Place is clean and well kept plus there's free wired and wireless internet access and if you don't carry your own wi-fi enabled gear then they have computers available for the guests to access the internet.
The staff is loud though very nice to the guest and helpful but when the two people in charge are in the hotel then you can expect very loud conversations which can be annoying, specially when you're trying to sleep.

Room Tip: The walls are thick but you can still hear the people outside the room if they're loud, the room...

I would never say that a backpacker's hostel with shared bathroom and 2 x 3 meter rooms with concrete walls can be considered good but - what a surprise! Kangaroo is very well located in a calm Asakusa neighbourhood of Tokyo and has some advantages that shouldn't be ignored :)
There is so much to visit around (Sensoji Temple, Welcoming Cat temple, charming little streets). Also there is a supermarket (not 7/11 but a real supermarket) just few minutes walk from the hostel - in the evenings there always have discounts on the sushi plates, so you can have a really delicious dinner for so few yens! The most important for all those who have Japan Rail Pass - Kangaroo is just 10 min walk from a JR station. You may not think about it at first but when it comes to pay 2 EUR for a single metro ride in Tokyo, then you start to appreciate the fact that your hotel is not far from a JR line, which you can take for free with your pass.
About Kangaroo itself - the rooms are tiny but equiped with a fridge and a small table. There was never a queue to the bathroom, there were hear dryers available. There are computers in the lobby, wi-fi, comfy sofas... Really, this hostel is worth to be recommended.

Kangaroo hotel was my last resort as I was looking for a hotel with an en suite toilet. Stayed in the 4 bedded room for the first night before shooting off to Osaka the next day. The room would be suitable if you were staying with kids and have only 1 big luggage. We had 4, and that meant that one of us had to keep our luggage outside while we were trying to unpack since there was no space at all. We literally had to climb over our luggage and crawl on beds. Despite the size, and hard concrete walls, the bed was surprisingly warm. We slept straight through without waking up. The toilets had heaters with a strong pressure. We stayed in the 2 bedded tatami room for the remaining 7 nights. Just enough for 2, although whenever we had to open our luggage, we would fold the bedding up so we had more space. It's 15 minutes away from the minamisenju station. With a 7-11 and Shimagaya nearby, and Santoyu just outside minamisenju JR station. There's a McDonalds there that is open 24 hours. Shimagaya has really good bento sets that can be brought back to the hotel and heated up with the mcicrowave :) Oh, the toilets has no bidet, and there is no hose, so it was an inconvenience for some. But never the less, the friendly staff and comfy bed made up for everything else.

Room Tip: Try going for the japanese style room, at least you get more space when you fold the bedding up. And...

Chanced upon this hotel while researching for a place to stay in expensive Tokyo. We wanted a place which is affordable for budget travellers like us and yet conveniently located to the many subway lines so that we can have a choice to plan our itinerary accordingly.
We stayed in this cosy little place between 16 Dec 2011 to 21 Dec 2011.

Something to share before you decide to book this place for a short stay.

Booking: call the hotel or email them to let them know the duration of the stay and selection of room type. I think they have double rooms and for groups of 4, choice of tatami style or western style rooms. You dun have to make any down payment but cash on arrival is expected. So get ready your yen for payment. It's really a hassle free process except that their website is in Japanese language.

LOCATION
Pros:Cosy and quiet. Neatly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of downtown areas like shinjuku and harajuku, Yet not too far away. We were just few stations away from Akihabara, Asakusa and Ueno. Only took less than 20mins to get to these famous attractions.
About 30-40mins away from Shinjuku, Harajuku, Shibuya which was ok for us.The food surrounding this area is pretty good and cheap. Below 1000yen for dinner, which was fantastic for us. Accessible to Hibiya line, Tsubuka express line & JR joban line which was a plus point. Only 2 stations away from Nippori on JR line Which is the transfer point to get to yamanote line and to Narita Airport on the Keisei express line.
There are quite a number of homeless people roaming around but they are harmless and never bothered us.
One of them even offered us help when we lost our way trying to locate the place.
There were a few convenient stores and mini mart like 7 eleven located near the hotel which was great too for us to get drinks and snacks.

Cons: It's pretty out of the way at first, We gt confused and lost as it was hard to locate the place. But it gets better after the first day. It states 10 mins from the station, but we struggled for 30mins on the first day as we were disoriented after the long flight. Its about 15mins walk from Minamisenju JR Station.

Room
Pros: Spotless and clean. You get more than what you are paying for in Japan. Nice comfortable lobby. With WIFI access in the lobby and free of charge use of the mac computers was handy so you don't need your laptops. There's an LCD tv in my room and mini bar. Hotel does not provide toothbrush, toothpaste, towel or shavers. But They provide shower gel, shampoo and hair conditioner, cotton bud and face towel. Toilet is not ensuite though, but i really love the bath facilities. It is on separate levels though, male and female toilets on level 2 and 3. Bathing facilities on level 1. Always clean and tidy. Hot water dispenser and microwave oven on every floor, laundry facilities on level 1. You have to change into a bedroom slippers which is provided for upon stepping into the lobby. The air condition unit works both as a heater and air condition works like a gem on a cold winter night. Kudos to the hard working staff at Kangeroo for keeping everything clean. They are lovely and great.

Cons: Was very tiny, like most rooms in Tokyo. 4 of us checked into their dorm style room. There isn't alot of space to move around for four person. While you can't have a party in the room, there was sufficient space for a short stay. You can't have 4 person standing at the same time after our luggage occupying most of the standing space.

Conclusion: Don't expect 5 star hotel facilities for the price you pay for. It is indeed a hidden gem in minami senju. Quality is in between hotels and backpacker's. Alot better than the rest of the guest houses around the vicinity. I will stay here again when I am visiting Tokyo the next time around.

Room Tip: Ask for higher level if you don't want to be interrupted by noisy folks who check in, in the mid...

This place is quite lovely; the staff are friendly, rooms spotlessly clean and very comfortable but unfortunately it's near nothing and is quite quiet - I don't think many young people were staying there when I was. It's about 10 minute walk to a JR station which has you at Ueno in a matter of minutes so airport access is easy. But the price reflects the location I guess, so if you're after guesthouse style accommodation at a super cheap price but don't mind being a bit away from the action then this is a great choice. I also loved the funky modern design of the place, it was very cool.

A very cool building in a less busy area of Tokyo (but still only a few train stops away from where the action begins). Somehow they've manage to make the exposed concrete exterior and interior cool and cozy. It's certainly very clean and fresh. The room I had first reminded me of a jail cell without the bars because of the concrete walls and the hilarious size but again, within a second I was grinning and appreciating the concept. The bed was comfy, the fridge and aircon worked fine and the wood floors were polished and dusted to a smooth shine. Shared washrooms were well-kept, too. Microwave provided.

Employees were both very young and friendly and we managed fine with the English-Japanese dialogue. The reception area has a cool lounge with sofas and internet stations. Umbrellas and slippers were provided.

There's a grocery outside of the nearby train station that's perfect for picking up late night snacks and food for breakfast the next morning.

Would definitely stay here if I were to visit Tokyo again.

Room Tip: I had the corner room at the end of the hall. Probably the quietest, IMO.
