“Very average - don't go out of your way for this”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

This is our third trip to Japan and since we haven't had okonomiyaki yet we decided to try this one out based on the review. Compared to all other types of Japanese cuisine, I fully understand now why this one is not that famous - as it really is just a savoury pancake. Nothing special about it at all, apart from cooking it on a hot plate and sitting on tatami! We were in Ueno and decided to come over to Asakusa for it but had to say were quite disappointed with the whole experience. The lady that served us must be having a bad day and was very impatient - my son didn't wait long enough before climbing up the tatami (he has already taken off his shoes) and she shouted at him. It was not busy in the restaurant at all, so there were plenty of empty tables - I didn't really know why she got so upset. Also for your information, when they give you the pancake mix and ask you to mix it, you need to do it very vigorously - I mixed it in the way I usually mix things, she got so angry she just grabbed it from me rudely and funnelled all her fury into the pancake mix. She actually calmed down a bit afterwards and was fine, but we were a little taken aback by her attitude and it did leave a bad taste in my mouth. The other ladies all seemed nice enough though.

The food itself was ok - nothing spetacular. We love Japanese food and do a lot of research for every meal, but this one has definitely been a huge let-down from this trip. If you happen to be around here, say after visiting SensoJ, then maybe - but be prepared this is not that special.

“Fun, local haunt, great food!”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

Once we found it (look for it just caddy corner from the Boston Club Hotel), we had an awesome locals experience, with tasty food at a really good price. Ask for an English menu if needed, take off your shoes, and cook your own savory pancakes at the hot-plate that is your table. The staff took care with our ineptitude and came around often to make sure we didn't mess it up. And the end result was one of my favorite meals of a long trip to three different countries.

“Brilliant, a must eat!”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

I visited Sometaro on the back of a friend's recommendation to sample okonomiyaki and it was a really fun experience. Very easy to navigate to from Asakusa station, the street has Koban (police station) at the end of it so its easy to find and everyone knows about it. They make the dish on a teppan in front of you or you can make it yourself, a must eat!

“Japanese pancakes”
Reviewed April 21, 2013

These savory pancakes are quite popular in Japan and definitely an experience. We sat on tatami mats and had food cooked for us on the grill. There are many different choices of pancakes - noodles, vegetarian, fish, etc. Very affordable as well.

This is one of the best restaurants in Tokyo and so much fun. We could of eaten more just to enjoy the grill. Yes you grill it yourself. Have the Pork Teppanyaki ... so lovely. We also had so Shochu with hot water ...amazing ...have the Imo. We didn't have to wait but I could imagine this place gets popular.
