Not a bad choice for first timer

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 14, 2012
Not a bad hotel. About 2 min walk from the nearest exit at the Ikebukuro station - note, only from the closest exit as the station itself is huge and an interchange for various trains.

We have paid extra to get upgraded to a deluxe room. Too much expectation - We did get a higher floor but the room was, perhaps, two steps bigger than a typical double room? Very sad. It has an extra table and that's it! uurggghhh!! The super down side is - NO wi-fi! Not even wi-fi at the lobby!! The reception told us we could borrow routers but of this entire hotel, they only have 20 routers available for loan!!!! Very interesting.

The hotel has airport shuttle and we reserved our seats two days in advance. Despite repeated confirmation, our names were not on the list when we tried to board the bus. Thank goodness we had an early flight to catch so the bus was not full and they allowed us on. Imagine it was an afternoon bus and it was all full with pre-booked passengers!! Not something I would be expecting for a hotel like this.

The restaurants seem very decent and probably quite pricey, too! I do see local people lining up for the buffet at restaurant on the ground floor.

Not a bad choice if you would like to stay in this area. I would probably not stay here again because I would not stay in this area again.
Date of stay: June 2012
Room Tip: Don't bother paying extra for a bigger room - unless getting one on the club floors

Pleasant nice clean hotel. The room is spacious & clean, super-single twin bedded with complimentary internet, wired & wireless. Its about 5-10 minutes walk to Ikebukuro station. Breakfast was good, mixed of western and japanese. There isnt much to see & buy in the area. Its a place to put up for a night, and move on to the next destination the following day.

The four stars are for (a) the location, and (b) the front desk and managerial staff. I was waffling on giving it just three stars otherwise--it's just a standard large corporate hotel and those are generally, as this one was, nearly identical and pretty much just serviceable. I was attending a conference at a university in the area and thought about staying elsewhere; Ikebukuro is not exactly top on the Tokyo travel guide list of places to go, and some of my other activities were in Ginza which was on the opposite end of town. But I have to say I am a convert. Ikebukuro has a lively college-town kind of feel to it with all the students around (but not teen madness like Harajuku or Shibuya), plenty of places to eat at all hours because of that population, and had identical (but sometimes cheaper) stores as the rest of Tokyo.

The hotel's location is perfect, just off the south end of the metro/train station which gives you several useful lines (Yamanote, Maronouchi, and Yurakucho) and easy travel to the rest of Tokyo. You can nearly make it from the station to the hotel without going outside, which could be a detraction (who wants to stay so close to the station normally?) but in this case is fine--the hotel is separate from and in the most quiet and bourgeois part of the area near the station.
For a small fortune, we had a couple of drinks at the bar on the 25th floor and the view is fantastic. We also sucked up the ridiculous expense of the breakfast buffet one morning out of convenience--if you like Japanese food, though, pick the Japanese buffet--it was high-quality, with the usual congee, miso, pickles, rice, etc., but also a good choice of fish (smoked and raw), salads (the burdock and sesame was great), and even some Western food. But in general you don't need to eat and drink in the hotel because the area all around you is loaded with great choices (I especially liked Anpuku and Ashinoya, and there's a coffee shop on every block as usual).

The room was fine--we had a pretty good but not great view on the 14th floor--try to get higher than that if you can (I'm guessing around 18 you're not facing a building--we faced the police station and another building that were nearly the same height). It wasn't particularly noisy, although we could hear people in the hallway clearly, but this being Japan most politely moved into their rooms fairly quickly. There was the slightest hint of cigarette smell now and then (I purposefully reserved a non-smoking room), but I have stayed in "non-smoking" rooms in Japan that were terrible--this one was fine. The room was normal-to-large by Tokyo standards (meaning some crazy people who never travel will find it very small, but there was a sitting area and a closet). The biggest down side was the bed--it was rock-hard, really the worst I've experienced at this price and quality of hotel. We were staying for 5 nights, though--it'd probably be fine for one or two.

Everyone else is raving about the airport bus convenience--yes, it is the most convenient and worth it if you arrive early or late. But if you are saving money, the Yamanote line connects directly to the lines that serve the airports, and the Yamanote line is 2 minutes from the hotel, so that's pretty easy too. A little tip if you're really cheap: rather than take the Tokyo monorail if you're headed to Haneda, take the Keihin line from Shinagawa station. It was nearly half the price of the monorail (which is nearly half the price of the limo bus). But it's a local commuter train (we were the only gaijin on it), so if that's not your style, do the limo.

Room tip: The higher the better.

I booked this hotel for my brother and sister in-law when they came to visit me in Japan. The people at the hotel made their stay super enjoyable. The service was top notch. The room had a beautiful design, a great view, and was spotless! The hotel itself is only a 2 minute walk from Ikebukuro JR station, which is a major stop for almost every train in Tokyo. There were plenty of amenities for my Bro and Sis to enjoy on the days that I had to work so they never had to worry about being bored without me. Everyone on staff spoke English well, so I didn't have to interpret and my Bro & Sis didn't feel dependent on me.
I have already made a promise to return to this hotel when my Mom & Dad come to visit!

When we can, this is where we stay in Tokyo. Nothing, IMO, beats it…but I’m going for the view!

Take the Limousine Bus from the airport (don’t bother with the train) and you’ll be deposited in a beautifully appointed lobby. The staff all speak English, and frankly, can’t do enough for you. Your luggage will be carted to your room for you, and no tipping.

We did the rooftop breakfast once. There’s a breathtaking view of Fuji when the weather is clear, but I felt the food was over priced for what we got. There’s a Pronto down the street, we go there. There is a bakery on site, as well as a souvenir shop, high-end baubles and several restaurants we’ve never tried.

The room we book is a deluxe. I’m not sure what that means to them; it’s tiny, with two beds, a chair, table, desk and TV. There’s also a miniature refrigerator. There is really nowhere to unpack. There are two tiny drawers in the closet (no iron or ironing board) and a few hangers.
Anywhere else in the world I would be complaining, but the bottom line, for me, is, this room has a Fuji view and I didn’t fly more than halfway around the world to be enamored of my hotel room. I wanna see Fuji-san.

We make do with the space we have, piling things in corners as best we can, but mentally I prepare myself for a week of cramped quarters and living out of my suitcase. All that being said, there is nowhere in Tokyo I’d rather stay and I’ve been in quite a few hotels in town. For location, ease of railway station, food, atmosphere, otaku shopping and view, I call the Metropolitan home.

Room tip: We always get a room Fuji side, our traveling companion gets station side as he's a train hound.

I stayed at the Metropolitan Hotel for 4 nights. Definitely the biggest room I ever had in Tokyo for an affordable rate.
The location is fantastic, the room was very clean and relatively modern.
I will definitely come back again.
