The Metropolitan is in a great location, on the subway and the JR line at Ikebukuro. The staff in the hotel were really helpful and lots of them spoke English. The room was small, but totally normal by Japanese standards. There was a free LAN connection so bring a laptop if you can. It makes planning stuff much easier.
The restaurants and bars are very over priced so just head outside and find somewhere local. There are loads of good places and most have an English menu.
We were there a month after the earthquake and the numbers of tourists were way down. But we had absolutely no bad experiences as a result, the odd tremor but nothing to worry about. Please go and support Japan by travelling.

This hotel is great value for money. The staff were superb, nothing was too much trouble.
The hotel is located right next to the Ikebukuro train station so everything is easily accessible. The views from the bar and restaurant are superb i.e. Mt Fuju!

This hotel was spotless, staff speaks English, the internet (LAN) in room was fast and free but the TV was Japanese only. Normally this is not a big requirement! BUT we were there during the earthquake and had no idea what they are saying on TV. Fortunately we had internet access to get our news!! So glad we brought our computer!.

Back to the hotel. our superior Queen room amenities include shampoo, conditioner, soap, bath salts that turn your tub water green, deep soaking tub, very nice shower, super nice toilet with the usual Japanese bidet functions, free razor, shaving cream, toothpaste and toothbrush, hairbrush, hot water kettle and tea, mini fridge in room. The bed was firm but soft. Our children's superior twin room was larger. THe twin beds are just a foot apart. Each room also had a round table with two chairs and flat screen TV.

Pay extra for workout privileges-too expensive in my opinion. The breakfast buffet is large and had Japanese, Chinese and Western choices. Even with a discount coupon they gave us at check in, 1500 yen per person seems steep for breakfast.

The location is great. Short walk to Ikebukuro station. Direct train to major tourist destinations. Shopping, coffee shops, restaurants nearby,

They were very hospitable during the March 11th earthquake, when much of Tokyo ground to a halt and travelers were stranded. They set up information tables and had English speaking person available to give travel information the next morning. The restaurant was closed the next day but they gave us rice packets to eat in our rooms using the hot water kettle. The lobby was crowded with stranded Japanese that day and they gave out tea and water. Kudos to the staff. Just felt another aftershock while typing this in the room 2 days after the big earthquake! All the Tokyo buildings are built to sway during earthquakes and that is what they do!

The Metropolitan hotel is not in Tokyo's best location, but nearly on the railway and metro station of Ikebukuro. We stayed in a room which had the standard size (17 sqm), was clean, on a high floor which made Mt. Fuji clearly visible in the morning (we had a good deal). The breakfast was really disappointing and not worth its value, the business center's PCs cost a huge 100 yen for 5 minutes, there is no Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi seems not to be a common feature in Tokyo).

This hotel is a wonderful choice, located in Ikebukuro district, for backpacker. Surrounded by tourism node which include commercial strip along road, convenient shop, luxury shop, electronic department store, fashion department store, Mc Donald, Japanese craft museum, etc.
