I just returned from Tokyo yesterday. I've been to Tokyo many times, and I can say this, Japanese standards for hotel, motel, hostels, are clean. I stayed at a really nice Ryokan in Kagaonsen the night before we arrived in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. So yes you can understand why we were a little disappointed with signs all over the places, no slippers for the shower room although you have go barefoot once you passed the front desk, no big towels for showers in the common area, no shampoo (who carries around shampoo these days?), but we were okay with all that since we only needed one night, and we could be roughing it.
So after we came back around 10:30pm and got ready for bed, I spotted a big flea on the tatami, I killed it right away (although it took me a long time to kill it), when I spotted the second on the sheet, I called the staff immediately and started packing my bag, I was so disgusted by it and we didn't even bother complaining about it, just got our refund and got out of dodge. We were asked to talk to the manager, and his explanation was the fleas must be from other travelers.
So we wandered around the Ikebukuro Station after mid-night at that point, searching for a place to spend the night, not knowing a word of Japanese, we were lucky to find a gorgeous room at a love hotel called Hotel Domani near the South Exit of the JR Ikebukuro Station. Although it was more pricey, it was worth every single penny, Hotel Domani had sauna, karaoke (of course we didn't have the energy to do that), whirlpool, it was a truly amazing experience for us in Japan.
So when you pay 7800 yen a night, will you expect roughing it with fleas? Kimi Ryokan apparently is targeting at foreign travelers, it would not survive if their customers are Japanese.
